DIY miniature chess

Greetings the inhabitants of our site!
Today we will make small chess. But this homemade product should not be considered for its intended use. No, of course you can play these chess. But only, probably, tweezers will be needed for this. So small they are. But as a souvenir or presentation - that’s it.

To make mini chess, we need:

1. brass rods;
2. wenge tree;
3. beech tree;
4. lathe;
5. dremel;
6. ammonia;
7. transparent glue;
8. yacht varnish;
9. tweezers;
10. quite a lot of time.

Since the author does not have a CNC lathe, he decided to cut a cutter in the shape of a chess piece.

Thus, it will be possible to drill many figures of the same shape in almost one run. He began with pawns.

This is the simplest figure, but there are most of them, so we’ll practice at the same time.
By positioning the cutting tool on the opposite side, you can save a lot of time. The first figure is ready.

By the way, by the way, the author has a writing pen nearby so that you can roughly estimate the size of the resulting figure.

We have 16 pawns. But it’s natural to show how the author made each figure, I think it does not make much sense.

The manufacturing process is completely identical.

But the next piece is a rook. There are not many of them, unlike pawns, only 4 pieces. But for their manufacture, time was taken no less. In addition to the curly cutter, you also need to drill and cut the slots. The author made slits with the help of a diamond disk, which he clamped instead of a figure in a cartridge.

Thanks to the collet chuck, the workpiece can be removed and inserted back without disturbing alignment. It turned out something like this boat.

Next, the author proceeds to the manufacture of a chessboard. For this purpose, he bought in advance here such a small block of wenge wood.

Such bars for knife handles can be bought on aliexpress.

Can be ordered from another tree. By the way, aliexpress is cheaper than in ordinary stores in Russian cities.
Wood milling, we process surfaces. They should be perfectly even.

By the way, wenge has a very beautiful texture. The author of the video shares information that the most expensive natural parquet is made of this tree.
Further, the milling cutter goes deeper at a certain distance.

It will be a chess field. Of course, the chess field could simply be printed on a light tree, but this is not so interesting.It turns out such a small comb.

And exactly the same comb must be made on a light tree. In this case, it will be a beech.

After the grinding process, these two bars need to be carefully glued together.

After the glue dries, cut one half. Only a comb should remain of it. Cross milling again milling, and make two such blanks.

Well, now the hardest part. The cells must be very precisely aligned.

Then again cut and mill clean. Due to the fact that the author did not allow the glue to dry well, one cell flew away from the workpiece.

But it's not a problem. Quite simply, the author corrects this situation.
Next, on the opposite side, we remove all unnecessary.

After processing, it seemed to work out well, but most importantly in an adult way.

According to the author’s idea, the chessboard will be with a box for storing pieces, so he, using a lathe, makes a recess for this box.

The box itself is made of beech. His wood is denser and there is less likelihood of chips and various cracks, and the walls of this box are rather thin, so it will be much more reliable.

We mill the recess so that all the chess pieces fit, and there are not a lot of them, who are not in the know - 32 pieces.

At this stage, the most difficult thing, according to the author, is to precisely adjust it so that nothing is jammed, and it doesn’t fall out.

So that the figures in the box are not just randomly scattered, we make cellular restrictions for them.

In the photo and video, everything seems quite large, but in fact all sizes are not larger than an ordinary matchbox. Therefore, a small oversight and we start from the very beginning.

The author decided to cover all the wood with yacht varnish. But not to the gloss.

After coating, wipe with a cotton cloth.

Moisture is no longer scary, and the wood has a dull appearance. After all the manipulations, glue the bottom cover. Well, and accordingly it is also milled.

The author decided to cover the upper part of the blank twice with varnish. First applied the first coat of varnish, then followed by drying, and then the grinding process. Then he varnished the product again. This results in a more even and noble surface.

In order for the drawer to be easily opened, although this concept is relatively easy, because it is opened only with nails, it needs to make a handle. It opens with nails not because it is difficult, but because the product itself turned out to be just very small. The author makes a pen all of the same brass rods using a lathe. As a result, we get a tiny little thing. In general, the handle on Poksipol (transparent glue, cold welding) is glued to its place.

The cell limiter for storing chess pieces is also glued.

In the meantime, everything dries, let's make the rest of the figures. The most difficult figure is a horse. There is no room for error. Virtually everything is cut out manually. In general, if you get a horse, it means to be chess.

There were no problems with elephants. They are almost like pawns. It was not difficult for the author to make them. Especially after making 16 similar chess pieces.

But with the queen is already more difficult. Due to the specific shape, they still need to be modified manually with a cutter. Plus, the level of complexity adds, of course, to the size of the figure. In general, the author spent a considerable amount of time making queens.

The king is like a queen in form. True, with his headgear you need to tinker a bit. After all, the crown.
We also remove all unnecessary unnecessary manually. The benefit of kings is only two.

Well, that’s it, all the pieces are ready. The author arranges them with tweezers (they are so tiny).

Now half of them need to be blackened. The author uses ammonia as always.
A couple of hours of exposure, and then he burned the figures with fire.

It turned out pretty interesting color. Not pure black, but the figures of a friend from a friend are now quite easy to distinguish. You will not confuse for sure.

In general, a couple of weeks of work turned out to be a rather interesting souvenir. Of course you can play these chess, but it is really difficult to do, because they are very small.

Thank you for attention. See you soon!
