Bluetooth column in the style of the "Western" nineties

Modern capabilities and unique style of the 90s were combined in a project of an unusual Bluetooth speaker. This is not quite what many saw in their “nineties”. I just liked the idea of such a project.

Step 1: Tools and Materials

3D printing

1. 3D printer. The author used Makerbot replicator 2. You can use any other with a suitable working surface area.
2. ASA or PLA plastic for 3D printer.

Dyeing

1. Any spray can of paint of a suitable color. The author used Montana gold. You can also use colored PLA plastic.
2. Fine sandpaper. Needed for surface treatment before painting.

Electronics and accessories

1. For the transmission and playback of the audio signal used "insides" BOSEbuild Cuba. Firstly, due to the excellent sound quality, and secondly, due to the size and configuration of the components.
2. Battery. The author recommends using a lithium assembly for 12 volts and 4500 mAh.
3. Adapter to connect the battery to the main board of the device.
4. Adapter to connect the main board to the battery.

Step 2: Design

The author created the column design based on what he once had: a column with large speakers, a retractable handle, and controls on the front panel. The design was finally approved after studying photographs of old boomboxes. The main idea was the embodiment of an unusual, almost "wild" style.

It makes no sense to just copy the boombox of the 90s and paste modern components into it, so the author decided to finalize the retro design and add some new details. The graphics and colors were borrowed by the artist Keith Haring and the Memphis Group.

The main idea here is bright contrasting colors, funny patterns, bizarre shapes and a general sense of fun and playfulness.

The author began with a few pencil sketches to reflect the general idea.

Step 3: 3D modeling

For modeling, the author used the Fusion 360 program. Below are the necessary files for making parts of the case.

.F3D files for Fusion 360.
.STL files (You will need to print the “inside cover” part twice — these are the side elements of the handle that hold it on the case).
.DXF files - These are 2D files for laser cutting of the front and rear panels. These panels can also be printed on a 3D printer, corresponding to .STL files attached to the source page.

Step 4: 3D Printing

Step 5: Trying and Primer

Step 6: painting the first layer

The author used three colors: Dolphin, Pure Magenta, and Shock Yellow. They were quite popular in the 80s - 90s.

Aerosol must be sprayed from a distance of about 20 cm from the surface, first with horizontal stripes, with a slight approach to the previous layer, and then vertical stripes are applied in the same way. It is important to start spraying paint beyond the boundary of the part to be painted and to finish spraying also going beyond the boundary of the part. Let the paint dry before touching the part.

Step 7: Sanding

Step 8: Staining with a Second Layer

Step 9: Bonding

Step 10: Build

1. The back panel
2. Front panel (bottom layer)
3. Frame for speaker and controller
4. Battery
5. Front panel (top layer)
6. Screws M3 X 10 mm
7. Power cable
8. BOSEbuild speaker
9. BOSEbuild controller
10. Housing with handle

All components are pre-coated with glue, then fastened with bolts. The power plug is attached with [/ b] using hot glue.

Step 11: More Design Chips and Testing

To complete the image, the author made several vinyl stickers based on the works of Keith Haring. In general, it sounds pretty cool, and people pay attention to appearance. For true music lovers, an opening for the AUX cable is provided in front.

The result was a rather interesting project, which, perhaps, will encourage someone to make their own reproductions.

I wish you all success and thanks for your attention!
