DIY hydraulic ram pump


Hello everyone, I bring to your attention an interesting and useful homemadeif you need to water the garden or pump water for other purposes. A prerequisite for the operation of the machine is the presence of a height difference, that is, it must be a river with a good current, a spring and so on. You can pump water from such places without the cost of electricity 24 hours a day.

This design is an analog of a reducer. That is, due to the flow, a certain volume of water is circulated. We can convert this energy to supply a smaller volume of water to the height we need. Such a pump will work approximately like a hydraulic turbine. But this design is much simpler, it takes a little money and time to collect it, and even such a hydraulic pump is very durable, only the valves wear out here. So, we will consider in more detail how to assemble such a pump!

How does it work
The system consists of two valves, one works to release water, and the other to the inlet. The valve that works for the release is needed in order to hold water in the hose, which we will raise for our purposes to the desired height. As for the second valve, it is in the open state only when a small pressure of water acts on it. When the flow rate of the outflowing water increases, so does the pressure, and as a result the valve closes. It is at this moment that a water hammer occurs and water rises up the selective hose. Then the pressure stabilizes, the valve opens again and so on.

In the author’s car, the water rises just one meter. The performance of the device will depend on the height difference and on the volume of water flowing through the device.

The system provides a container with air. It works as a shock absorber for the pulse, that is, it allows you to take more water, increases the efficiency.

Materials and tools used by the author:

Material List:
- plastic pipes;
- two valves;
- tap (optional);
- two plastic tees for pipes;
- a bottle;
- hoses and more.

Tool List:
- a lathe (the author cut the thread on the pipes);
- a hacksaw for metal;
- glue for pipes, fum tape and other little things.

The process of manufacturing a ram:

Step one. We prepare pipes
The author cut a thread on a pipe lathe. This eliminated the need to buy adapters to install valves.



Step Two Assembly
We wind the valve onto the pipe threads, as the author did. The first valve to the outlet, and the last to the inlet. Using tees, we collect all the other nodes. You will also need to securely and tightly screw the bottle.


Step Three Test
Getting to the test. The author delivers water from a container simulating a river. His pump can supply water to a height of not more than one meter higher from the source. In general, the system can be upgraded and increased efficiency.

Valves are different. Apparently, the reverse is applied here. "Check" is a type of valve. )))

In terms of reverse? One in one direction, one in the other is installed.
An interesting, original device with a very limited possibility of real use. On a plain river, a very large cross section of the main pipe is needed, and on a mountain river, it is most likely easier to take water from a higher point directly, without a pump. But on the waterfalls, rapids will work perfectly.
