In autumn, under garlic, on a plowed area, the soil was cultivated by a cultivator. In the spring, on an unplowed plot, the walk-behind tractor began to stop from overload, although the plowing depth (soil rise) of 25 cm was indicated in the operating instructions. In the store, this indicator was correctly rejected, saying that it was a cultivator, not a plow. In order to loosen the soil deeper, it was decided to make our own cutter with a working width of 100 mm narrower than already available, on the occasion I bought 16 segment knives from the Smolensk mowing machine, which ultimately turned out to be difficult for the cultivator. I had to cut the knives on the sides from the outside and two knives left and right from the inside. As a result, the walk-behind tractor began to pull well and go deeper into the soil without jumps and jumps. The height of the knives is limited by the engine sump and is equal to 160 mm, the depth of soil rise reached 20 cm, while the soil cultivated on the site can be described as heavy chernozem - loam. The design of the cutter is shown in the sketch.
The cutter knife consists of two parts welded together: the vertical part from a steel sheet 5 mm thick and 50 mm wide, the horizontal part from the Don-1500 header segment 2.5 mm thick and 76 mm wide. The horizontal knife is vertical at an angle of 30 degrees to the main plane, like a plow share with a cultural blade. The cutting edges of the knives do not extend beyond the coordinate axis (like milling cutters for metal processing), which ensures the optimal loosening angle of the soil (cutting angle) - this is the main difference between my milling cutter for tillage.
Later, the Ugra motor-block of the Kaluga plant was purchased. The milling cutter sold to the walk-behind tractor, while tilling the soil, throws up a heavy aggregate and does not want to deeply loosen the soil, the knives and the milling cutter itself are made without regard to the laws of cutting. Colleagues with a walk-behind tractor recommended loading the unit with counterweights to increase the weight and depth of cultivation, but this is an absurd decision and we went the other way, namely, I made a new cutter, based on previous experience. The results are very positive.
When spring moistened soil was treated with segmented knives, the cutters became clogged with dirt, the triangular ends had to be cut off with a grinder, the cutter's work improved.
At A.S. Pushkin on this account has the words: "And experience, the son of difficult errors, And genius, friend of paradoxes, And chance, god inventor ...". Based on the experience gained, it is recommended that manufacturers create a motor-shovel driven by an electric motor (similar to electric mowers), relatively light and compact, transported in the trunk of a car. The mill itself goes deeper into the soil and pulls the gardener, the gardener, along with the coulter disappears.
For lovers of motoblocks and motor cultivators, I can recommend redoing factory-made cutters, taking into account the fact that the back of the knives is on the coordinate axis, the knife must be straightened, the upper part trimmed at an angle of 30 degrees and the segment welded from the header. If desired, in the factory, or in the forge, you can make a knife to the cutter whole, L-shaped.
When hanging knives of this type on tractor mills, we will have a pushing plow-cultivator with new features: in productivity and quality of soilless tillage.
Comparing the work of the cultivator and walk-behind tractor, we can say that the cultivator is easier, more convenient and more maneuverable to drive. The purpose of the walk-behind tractor is wider, but managing it requires a lot of effort. At the walk-behind tractor, the clutch cable at the handle often breaks. When working with the mower, the fastening bolts weaken and require frequent hauling, the mower knives quickly fail, for the 100 best products you could put a couple of extra sets of knives in the zip. All this technique is not made for people, but for rationalizers and inventors: create, invent, try.
In conclusion, I would like to note that I will be glad if these proposals for the modernization of cutters are used by lovers of cottages and gardens and will not be left unattended by manufacturers.
