Sergey is engaged in the production and repair of traditional musical instruments in Africa. But today, with friends, Sergey decided to make a couple of very cool author's longboards.
Manufacturing process.
From the previous project in the workshop, the author still has a shield glued from maple with inserts from American walnut.
The two-meter shield, and to make it more convenient to work with, cuts it in half on a circular saw and cuts off the excess miter.
The result was two compact blanks.
Since Sergey has a computer-controlled milling machine at his disposal, he is developing 3D model. It also calculates the trajectory of the cutter for both longboards.
The CNC machine opens up quite wide possibilities; its use allows to produce boards with variable thickness. 15 mm in the central part with a smooth transition to 10 mm at the edges.
The first program drills holes for attaching pendants.
The second program in a spiral cut relief.
To prevent the board from being knocked out of the workpiece, the author fastens it to the desktop with self-tapping screws, through the hole for attaching pendants.
The third program cuts the board from the workpiece. And repeats all the operations for the second workpiece.
Further chamfers with a radius mill.
After processing the CNC machine by the milling cutter, artifacts remained on the board (traces from the milling cutter).The drawing is beautiful, but the author’s idea does not imply it.
Therefore, he polishes it using a belt sander.
Maple is a strong and light tree, but it lacks color, it is too light.
At colleagues in the workshop, Sergey shot a little stain of the color of mocha. She will give copyright longboards a rich look.
After the stain dries, Sergey gives the boards to the designer Alena for painting.
Alena uses acrylic paints, as they dry quickly.
She wants to open part of the board with black varnish, protects part of the surface with masking tape.
Then he paints.
Repeats the same steps with the second board.
On one board the paint is already dry, removes tape.

The graphics for the boards are based on African and Australian ornaments. Alena puts drawings.
After drawing the graphics, Sergey masks the edges of the board with masking tape, and prepares the workspace for working with fiberglass and epoxy.
Sergey uses a two-component transparent epoxy resin. It mixes components by weight, epoxy requires accuracy.
Applies the first layer of resin and covers the bottom of the board with a previously prepared piece of fiberglass. This is done so that the board is stronger and tougher. The excess resin is smoothed with a rubber spatula.
Then the second layer is applied. Bubbles and irregularities are leveled by a gas burner.
Trims excess fiberglass.
After the resin hardens on the bottom of the board, it fills the upper side with one layer. This is done in order to protect the graphics and wood.
Further, after polymerization of the resin, it covers the board with transparent sandpaper on a self-adhesive base, and rolls it with a roller.
It processes the edges of the board, removes excess sandpaper, slightly rubbing it with a file.
And completes the whole process by installing pendants.
Cleans the places around the caps of the bolts.
The same actions with the second board.
The boards are ready, adjusts the tilt force.
