A unique knife from an old file with simple tools

Hello everyone, in this instruction we will look at how you can make a strong, strong, reliable knife from a file. The author’s blade turned out to be very strong, it can withstand the weight of a person, if you stand on his foot and dance! The blade is correctly released, it springs and does not break under load. The author also tried to throw him at the wall, this did not affect him in any way. Such high-quality steel can be sharpened to a razor condition and the blade will not blunt for a long time.

The author made an antique knife, a Christmas tree-like drawing was applied to his blade, and the blade was also etched. The pen is made in an interesting way. If the project interests you, I propose to familiarize yourself with it in more detail!

Materials and tools used by the author:

Material List:
- old Soviet file;
- wood for the handle;
- steel cable;
- sheet copper;
- epoxy adhesive.

Tool List:
- manual belt sander;
- oven and hardening oil;
- domestic oven for holidays;
- oil for wood impregnation;
- acid for etching;
- power supply, paint, saline (for etching the picture);
- drill;
- drill;
- drilling machine;
- hacksaw for metal and wood;
- vise;
- sandpaper;
- grinding stones for sharpening;
- hammer;
- pliers;
- blacksmithing supplies.

Manufacturing process homemade:

Step one. Primary profile manufacturing
First, take a file and clean it from rust. A homemade file will need an old, Soviet one. In such files, the metal is uniformly carbon throughout the entire thickness, and in modern ones it is raw inside, and only on top they have a hard coating.

To start, we burn the file, so it will be easier to clean it. After annealing, we process the file manually using a manual belt sander.

Next, cut off the piece we need and heat it in the furnace for further forging. Gradually pull out the blade we need, cut off the excess with the grinder. As a result, we get excellent workpiece quality. Thanks to forging, the file steel will perfectly meet the requirements for the steel from which quality knives are made.

After forging, it is recommended to release and normalize the steel. Heat the blade to a red glow and let cool in air.

Step Two Grinding
Now we are finalizing the profile of the blade on a belt grinder. We also grind the plane of the blade.Judging by the photo, the author uses a rather large grain for such works.

Step Three Bevels
Next, we make the bevels on the blade so that the knife is very sharp and well cut, they need to be made as wide as possible. The author solves a similar problem using a flat file, which is mounted on a special guide. We attach the blade with carnations to the board and get to work. A little time and effort and here we get excellent bevels on the blade. When working, make sure that the same amount of metal is removed from both sides, otherwise the blade may not go in the center of the blade.

And so that the grinding line is clearly visible, the blade can be painted with spray paint. We also refine the area of the handle with a file.

Step Four Heat treatment
Our blade is still soft, such a knife will quickly blunt, and you can bend it with a little effort. To give the blade hardness, it must be hardened. We heat the steel to a yellowish glow and lower it into the heated oil.

After hardening, release the blade in the oven at a temperature of 200 ° C. After the vacation, the author got a very strong blade. He tried to stand on his foot and dance, threw metal into the wall, cut a bottle, broke wood with the tip of a knife, the blade passed all these tests without problems.

Step Five Etching
Etching will make the blade darker, so it will look better, and will rust less. Acid will be required for etching. In order for the etching to be successful and of high quality, the blade after hardening must be well sanded to a shine. First, the author polishes it on a tape machine, and then works manually with sandpaper.

If you need to make a drawing on the blade, this is not a problem. Apply paint and scratch the drawing with a sharp object. Well, then the voltage in combination with a saline solution in the metal uncoated areas. The result is a beautiful and durable drawing.

Step Six Pen making
To make a pen, we take a suitable piece of wood and with an hatchet we form from it a semblance of a bar. Further, the author cuts this bar of needlework along manually with a hacksaw, as a result, a blank for the handle is obtained.

We drill a hole in it and then bore it in the form of a gap under the knife shank. The slot hole can be made a jigsaw blade.

We install the blade in the blank and form the desired shape of the handle on the tape machine. As soon as the handle is ready, glue the knife shank into it with epoxy glue. The author decided to strengthen the nose of the handle with a thin steel cable, with it the knife looks very interesting. We drill holes under the cable in the handle, insert the cable and wind it onto the handle. We tie the ends, cut off the excess and then hammer the knot into the handle so that it does not protrude above the surface. For even greater reliability, this part of the handle can be coated with epoxy glue.

Seventh step. Bolister
The author also made a bolister for a knife, here copper sheet was used. And to make the metal soft, it must be burned with a gas burner. We walk about the bolister with a hammer so that dents appear, so the effect of aging the product is achieved. The bolister is installed on epoxy glue, everything looks pretty pretty.
We carefully grind the handle and impregnate it with oil to protect the tree from water.

That's all, the knife is ready, the author sharpened it to a bladed state. The knife shaves hair, cuts paper, and also easily cuts a thick book. What this miracle of fine art looks like, look at the photo.
