Step One: Material Selection and Drawing
For convenience and ease of assembly, the author uses plywood for the manufacture of parts with a large area. The plywood seats and the sides of the bench.
The dimensions of the bench depend on the size of its functional part - the shoe box. Shoes are stored on the slatted bottom and a lot of space will be required. Therefore, find out what size your shoe box should be and prepare a general drawing of the bench. You can use the drawings of the author.
When processing all wooden surfaces, a primer and paint were used. Thanks to the primer, the tree acquires additional water-repellent properties and is easy to clean, and the paint lays evenly and adheres better to the wood.
You can use any tested paint that is compatible with the primer. If you plan to carry out all painting work inside the living room, then you do not have to choose - you will need acrylic paint.In other cases, use any furniture paint or universal - for example, alkyd enamel.
Step Two: Preparing Parts
Prepare a template for the sidewalls and make markings on plywood. It is better to cut two parts at once. So, you can be sure that they will be the same, and the whole structure will become smooth.
Prepare the seat. Manually sand the edges of all plywood parts.
Boards and slats should also be pre-sanded. Mark the joints of the parts and make holes for the screws. The author uses a special conductor for drilling, which allows you to drill inclined holes for screws and screws. Thanks to them, the parts are joined joint to joint without cutting grooves and the use of complex furniture joints.
Step Three: Build the Bench
Join the side parts with a wooden plank. This will be the back of the bench. The author has put here for reliability two diagonal struts.
Assemble the box. To do this, butt-to-butt, join four frame parts and fix the rails on the frame at such a distance that the shoes fit freely between them, but do not fall down.
Fasten the drawer accessories on the drawer itself and on the inside of the bench sides. Insert a box and check for smooth running. Only then tighten the seat.
Fourth step: protective and decorative treatment
The author used a primer before covering the bench with paint. All stages of staining are carried out after assembly. Just remember to remove the drawer and start painting.
Use a roller to evenly paint large surfaces. So, the primer and paint will lie more evenly. Start working with a brush in hard-to-reach places and only then proceed to painting with a roller.
If you use acrylic paint, you may need a varnish that will create a strong protective film on the surface and protect the paint layer from mechanical damage.
Wait for the paint to dry well and put the box back in place. It remains only to establish a bench with a drawer for shoes in its permanent place.
