5 useful Android smartphone features you need to know about

We continue to consider the useful functions of smartphones on the Android operating system, which are rarely used.

Function 1. Setting a limit on Internet traffic

Cellular providers provide mainly limited-volume monthly free traffic packages. If these values are exceeded, the service providers either limit the speed or automatically connect additional - paid - gigabytes.

In order not to constantly monitor and check how much free traffic has already been spent, you can configure its automatic control. In this case, the smartphone system will be engaged in its tracking and so that you do not exceed the quota.

In the "Settings" for this, the developer highlighted a separate item "Data Usage".

To establish automatic control over the consumption of traffic, put checkmarks in front of the lines “Mobile data” and “Restriction of mobile data”. After that, we set 2 values, raising or lowering the corresponding limit lines: the amount of gigabytes consumed, after which the notification will come (gray), and also the amount after which the system will turn off the data transfer (orange).

In addition, Android maintains individual statistics on traffic consumption (both in the background and in active modes) by each application installed on the smartphone.

Thanks to this, you can quickly identify the program that eats extra megabytes, and either delete it or limit the consumption of data in the background.

Feature 2. Blacklist

Sometimes it is necessary to block calls from a specific number. This can be done by adding this subscriber to the black list. Everyone knows (or at least heard) about this useful option, and it’s easy to turn it on, but for some reason the vast majority prefers to “drop the old-fashioned calls” from unwanted interlocutors.

To block a specific number, you need to go to “Contacts”, where we select the subscriber whom we want to blacklist. We go into the menu of this number and click on three points located one above the other (the icon is in the upper right corner of the screen).

A window will appear with a list of possible actions where you will need to select the "Add to the black list" item (on some versions of Android it may be called "Only voicemail" - you need to check the box next to it).

That's all, the contact is blacklisted. Now calls from this person will not arrive on your phone.

Function 3. Safe Mode

Safe mode is a special protective function that allows you to deal with those applications that cause the phone to freeze due to incompatibility or software conflict, as well as viruses that disguise themselves as various programs.

If such problematic software is not uninstalled in normal mode, you can boot your device in safe mode, which deactivates any third-party applications and makes it possible to eliminate them.
To start it, hold down the phone’s power off button. In the window that appears, long press the “Power Off” item.

Now a window has appeared where you can select the option “Reboot to safe mode”.

After that, the phone will boot in safe mode. The corresponding inscription will appear at the bottom of the screen, and all the icons of third-party applications will be gray.

Now all malware can be removed.

For some phone models, this method may not work. Then try the following option:

1. Turn off the phone.
2. Press and hold the power button and volume down button at the same time.
3. When the phone turns on, release the power button and continue to hold the volume down button.

After that, the phone should start downloading safe mode.

To exit safe mode, you must restart the phone again.

Function 4. Increase Phone Performance

After some time of use, many notice a decrease in the speed of the phone. The cause of this problem may be one or more resource-intensive applications installed on the device.

You can check how much a particular program loads the processor by looking at the detailed statistics of running software. This function is included in the complex of capabilities of system developers, therefore, for its inclusion some manipulations will be required.
First of all, go to "Settings", and then select the "About device" section.

In this section, you must click on the item "Build number" several times.

After that, a message will appear at the bottom of the screen that the developer mode is running.
Now we return to the "Settings" and go to the "Developer Settings" section, where we are interested in the option "Running Services". We open it and see detailed statistics on the consumption of system resources by each of the applications running in it.

If among them there are applications that heavily load RAM, they can be forced to stop (and if they are not used too often and these are not system applications, then it is better to delete them).

Another good way to free up the RAM of your smartphone is to enable the "Do not save operations" option. This item is also located in the "Developer Options" section, but almost at the very end of the list.

We put a checkmark in front of it, and the system will “keep in memory” only one application, automatically closing all previously opened programs. This will allow the device to run faster.

You can increase the phone’s speed a bit more if you turn off window animation. The corresponding options are also located in the "Developer Options" section. They are called “Window Animation Scale”, “Transition Animation Scale”, and “Animator Duration Scale”. We find them in the list and - by entering each one in turn - turn off the animation.

After this, applications on the smartphone should open faster.

Function 5. Hidden game in browser

In the end, we’ll talk about another opportunity to have fun if the Internet has become unavailable on your phone for any reason. This, in fact, is not a function of the phone, but the Easter Egg of the developers of the Google Chrome browser, which is preinstalled on almost every cell phone.

If you use it to access the network, and the connection suddenly disappears, the program informs you that there is no network connection, and such a dinosaur appears on the page.

Not everyone knows that if you click on it, a mini-game will begin. The dinosaur will run forward, and the player must “click” on the screen in time so that he jumps over various obstacles.

The longer the dinosaur can run, the more points the player will earn.
Such entertainment can shorten the waiting time until the Internet connection is again available.

Thanks for attention!
We hope the article was helpful. Use more advanced features of your phone and it will become even more convenient to use!
