Coffee Bean Roast Analyzer

Today we will consider the manufacture of a device that analyzes and transmits via the bluetooth channel data on the degree of roasting of coffee beans. You ask why such information is needed? Let's read what the master who made this device writes.

Here is the master and made an inexpensive analogue of an industrial device. After assembly, the device must be calibrated, as in the video below. The standard is the white surface of the PVC pipe.
Let's watch a video with an example analyzer.

For the manufacture of the device, the master used the following

Tools and materials:

-10 kOhm resistors 2 pcs;
-2 buttons;

Bluetooth module HC-05;
-Tumbler;
Solid State Relay (AD-SSR6M12-DC-200D);
- PVC tee 1/2 "x 1/2" x 3/4 ";
-1/2 "PVC connector;
-Box;
-Arduino Uno;
- Power supply 5V 2A;
USB cable
-Tray;
-Glue gun;

Now a little about the choice of materials.

VCC 6150 lamps are incandescent lamps selected due to their high infrared power. Incandescent bulbs are used instead of the LED backlight provided on the AS7263 module.

SparkFun Qwiic Shield - This board is used because of its ability to easily connect to the AS7263 sensor.
Solid State Relay - This type of relay has been selected because of its quick and quiet operation. You can replace the relay with a less expensive one, but you will need to change the code.

The size of the PVC components was determined by the size of the tray.

Step One: Scheme
The wizard provides a connection diagram.

S1 - power switch
SSR1 - Solid State Relay
B1 - Sampling Button
B2 - calibration button
R1 - 10 kΩ resistor
R2 - 10 kΩ resistor
L1, L2, L3, L4 - incandescent lamps

Step Two: Light Bulbs
To mount the lamps around the sensor, a mounting ring with 3D printing was made, you can download the file here. The lamps were connected in parallel. For insulation, the master processed the contacts with hot-melt adhesive.

Step Three: Receive Port
Further, the master collects the port into which the tray with coffee grains will be installed. Installs the connector in the tee. Installs a button in the connector. A sensor with a fixed ring with lamps is installed in the upper hole of the tee.

Step Four: Installation
Connects a relay and a toggle switch.

Sets the calibration button and connects the analyzer port button.

Connects a power supply to the relay.

Connects the bluetooth module.

Step Five: Code
Loads code.

Step Six: Bluetooth
To display Bluetooth results, download Bluetooth Electronics from keuwlsoft from the Google Play Store. Save the DegreeOfRoastInfraRedAnalyzer.kwl file to the keulsoft folder in the internal memory of the Bluetooth device. Use the save icon in the application to download the kwl file. Then connect to the HC-05 Bluetooth module and run the downloaded file.

Step Seven: Analysis
Next, the master calibrated the device and analyzed the grains of different degrees of roasting at different wavelengths.
R - 610 nm
S - 680 nm
T - 730 nm
U - 760 nm
V - 810 nm
W - 860 nm

According to the author, the sensor works best at a wavelength of 760 nm. Four photographs show an analysis of the roasting of grains from green non-roasted to heavily roasted.

The master did not describe the installation of the analyzer in the box, but this is not so important. According to the master, the device works and is a worthy replacement for an expensive industrial analyzer.
