In this article, John, the author of the John Zhu YouTube channel, will tell you how to make split nuts (countersunk nuts with a slot) for a hand saw, as well as a screwdriver for these nuts.
The author made such gizmos both for personal use and for the exhibition of homemade tools "Mitch peacocks".
Materials
- brass plate
- Scrap steel sheet 1.5 mm thick
- Brass nuts.
Instruments, used by the author.
- Bulgarian
- Grinder
- Hacksaw
- File, chisel
- Engraving machine
- Vise, anvil, hammer.
Manufacturing process.
First, the author fixes the blanks in a vise, and makes serifs on both sides of the brass nuts with a dremel.
Then saws them in depth with a hacksaw for metal.
Now, John screws the nuts onto the bolt and seizes them with another nut so that they can be machined on a belt sander. In such a simple way, he rounds the shape of the faces.
As it turned out, the third nut is not really needed to fix the nuts; just select the correct direction of rotation.
The nuts are ready, you can unscrew the bolt.
To make a screwdriver, the author uses a piece of steel strip 1/16 inch thick, cuts a rectangular blank.
The strip in thickness was larger than the cutouts on the nuts. Again uses a dremel, and trims the file. A file is best suited for this.
To finish with the nose of the screwdriver, the master makes cuts in the middle of the steel plate and cuts out two teeth, trying to guess so that the teeth coincide with those two grooves on the nuts.
Deburring on a grinder.
For the pen, the author selects a piece of brass, which he left with from the previous project.
Slices a small piece.
To secure the tip of the screwdriver, John expands the slot in the handle using a chisel.
And then slightly flatten both ends. This is enough to fix the tip.
He checks that there is enough space between the teeth in order to receive that part of the bolt that protrudes slightly beyond the nut. The bolt can simply be shortened a little.
Such nuts can be very useful for countersunk. In addition, they do not have to knock out the hexagonal grooves, it will be enough to drill a round hole along the diameter of the nut.
One of the uses for such nuts is the saw handle.
All a good mood, and successful projects!
