Silver spoon. Modeling and casting a unique cutlery

Today, the author of the Bonn Factory YouTube channel will demonstrate the process of creating a unique teaspoon. This is how it will look:

For work, we need the silicone form of the parts of the spoon.



Due to the abundance of bone processes, the form turned out to be multicomponent and with a bunch of air channels, but at the same time it is rather difficult to get an acceptable wax. A plus to everything (or rather a minus) will also be the fact that when the form was cut, the author managed to damage it and tear off a piece, which in turn created a cavity and influxes of wax in the end.


In this video, in 10 minutes of your time, the author tried to show the history of creating a unique spoon in full, and also to show why this spoon is an artwork, and not just a spoon that will roll among others in your kitchen table.



So, we collect the form and begin to melt the wax.


Of course, you can use a wax injector, but nevertheless it is necessary for mass copying, and now we will completely manage with a simpler injection method.


After the wax has hardened, but still remains plastic, we systematically disassemble the form into parts.


And here, unfortunately, the first pancake comes out lumpy, the knuckles of the spine did not spill. We write this to the unheated form and repeat the process.


Well, the second time we managed to achieve an acceptable quality of wax.



The author did not see any more attempt at that time and decided to correct minor defects manually. And in order not to hide even such trifles from the viewer, for clarity, he decided to use wax of a different color. Therefore, all the places that we will change and supplement in the future will be highlighted.






If we only fixed defects on the handle, then we have a lot of work to do with the skull.


Progress does not stand still and since the development of the model and its printing, the master’s eye has become sharper and his hands more obedient, so for himself he noted the missing volume and relief in the skull and now we will complement it.



After surfacing the mass, it is necessary to treat it with a cutter, and smooth the scratches with solvent.

Now we have to make facial features sharper and more expressive, to draw lines of bone growth and solder the horns, and after that it will be possible to combine the spoon into a single whole.




The author also changed the bend of the spine, this stroke was the final work on model.

Now you see that even with the prepared forms, each work is filled with manual labor and is unique in its own way.
Since the casting is relatively massive, in order to avoid subsidence and not spills, the sprue should also be large. In this case, it even weighs more than the product itself.

After washing the spoon in a high pressure washer, we can observe the result.


As you can see, the casting turned out to be clean, without pores, cracks and any shrinkage. The only thing on the spoon is a small fraction of air bubbles, which have become metal dots in the end, but this will only add work in machining, which ultimately will not affect the appearance at all.






After the completion of the machining, for the final cleaning of the spoon from the possible residues of the mold mass and for its degreasing, we bleach it. To do this, cover with brown dissolved in water and heat, then cool in water and immerse in an ultrasonic bath with heated citric acid.





After that, without using any chemistry (after all, this is a cutlery), without touching the spoon with our hands, we will age it a little, again, in accordance with the style of the product itself. To do this, we heat the spoon with a gas burner at the very tip of the flame, in this part the flame is rich in oxygen and is oxidizing. In our case, oxidation is aging.
