Three ways to cut thin strips on a circular saw

Hello dear readers and the inhabitants of our site!
In this article, Mark, author of The Wood Whisperer, a YouTube channel, tells you how to cut thin strips on a circular saw.

There are many reasons why you might need thin strips of wood: perhaps it is lamination of uneven surfaces or cutting borders for chipboard or MDF surfaces, for plywood welts, if you want to gracefully border them with a natural wood edge.

Materials
- Treated wood bars.

Instruments, used by the author.
- A circular saw
- Magnetic lock
- Pusher
- Ruler.

Manufacturing process.
Usually such things are done on a band saw, because there is a nice, thin blade that spares the material. The band saw is just made for this kind of job. But not everyone has a similar tool. The author of this article will tell us how to perform such work on a circular saw.

So, there are three ways to do this work. But first, let's talk about the difficulties. Why can not you just set the emphasis on the desired thickness, say 3-5 mm, and cut off these strips just like that.

The problem is that between the stop and the blade a very small space is formed, as a result it is rather risky to push the material, as thin strips become unstable, flexible, and “walk” under your arms.

And this problem leads to a certain solution. First: you can use a special pusher. It can be either industrial production, or made privately, by any commercial company.

The second solution is very simple. devicemade of a small piece of sheet material, at the end of which there would be a small grip, a tooth.

Now we set the emphasis in such a way that our device fits into the desired distance to the blade, plus the distance of the thickness of the future workpiece, and then fix the emphasis.

Next, we put the wooden blank close to the fixture and carefully make the cut.

Even if we cut off part of the grab, we still have something to work on with subsequent cuts. This method is just great for short items. But it is somewhat unreliable when it comes to long products.

Now the author will tell us about his favorite third method. In it, as a limiter, a wooden beam or a magnetic stop is used, which are located to the left of the saw blade.

The author makes a mark on the product in order to build a blade on it and make an incision of the appropriate size. Then he puts a limiter and secures it.

The first cut takes place without any problems, since everything has already been set in advance.

Subsequent cuts are made after setting the limiter next to the workpiece by slightly pushing the stop to the desired position of the workpiece, close to the limiter. It is important to be careful not to knock the stopper from its original position.
This method, on the one hand, is very simple, and on the other hand, it does not imply any restrictions on the size of the materials or workpieces produced.

Thus, the application of one of the above methods depends mainly on the size of the forest, and the size of those elements that are supposed to be obtained from it. And they all give good results.

Of course, it would be much more organic to make such strips on a band saw, since its blade is much thinner and, accordingly, the material consumption is less compared to processing with a circular saw. At the same time, the circular saw gives one indisputable advantage - such cuts do not need any serious subsequent processing. It is enough to simply grind the edges of the cut if you intend to glue them to any other surface. They turn out really very smooth.

So, as you have seen for yourself, there are many ways to achieve your goal, and the light has not converged on one method!
Thank you Mark for an interesting workshop, follow safety precautions!

All good mood, good luck, and interesting homemade goods!
