8 useful tips for home and workshop

Hello dear readers and the inhabitants of our site!
In this article, the author of the izzy swan YouTube channel will tell you, introduce you to several carpentry tricks and tricks that will facilitate your work in home workshop.

Materials
- Boards, plywood trimmings
- PVA glue
- Wood screws
- salt
- Nails.

Instruments, used by the author.
- Hammer, pliers
- Screwdriver
- Drilling machine.

So, the trick number 1:
Suppose you need to drill a guide hole for a screw, or make a base hole for a nail, but you do not have a drill of a suitable diameter. Then take the nail that you were going to use, bite off his hat and insert it into the chuck of a drill or screwdriver. The nail will do the work of the drill. Moreover, he copes with his new task perfectly, even when working with hardwood, such as, for example, Brazilian cherry. But the same nail can be used without a hat, for secret fastening of wooden elements, for example, for fastening platbands.

Trick number 2 and number 3:
For example, you need to make a prefabricated countertop from boards, and, as often happens, you have run out of clamps. The simplest solution may be ordinary planks screwed to the desktop. They should be screwed at a distance slightly larger than the estimated width of the product. If you have to work with glue, it is better to lay this section of the table with waxed paper to prevent smearing of glue on the working surface.

But ... you don’t have scissors to cut the paper of the right length. Then ... Resort to the help of any metal product with a straight sharp edge, for example, a metal ruler. Flat cut guaranteed!

We return to the previous trick: inside the designated area, spread the boards smeared with glue, fitting them tightly to each other. Then use two wedges to secure the structure. No worse than clamps or wyme! Wedges can be bought at a hardware store, or made by yourself.

Trick number 4 and number 5:
These are again tricks with gluing and pressing. We have three wooden planks that need to be glued together to obtain a more massive blank, for example, a furniture leg. When the glue is applied and distributed on the surfaces of the boards, before finally clamping the elements in the clamps, sprinkle the sticky sides with a few grains of kitchen salt (just a little!).Salt in such an amount will not affect the adhesive properties of the glue at all, but it will prevent slipping and displacement of the boards at the time of their tightening in the clamps.

But here you can do without production clamps. It is enough to cut a few simple U-shaped forms with a notch slightly wider than the width of your workpiece, which is to be clamped.
U-shaped forms themselves can be cut out on a band saw, electric, or mechanical jigsaw.

If there are none, then you can use a small block of length slightly longer than the width of the workpiece to be clamped. And then fasten to it on both sides a small block (it is advisable to first drill the guide holes for the screws so that the tree does not burst). The result is the same figure.

Now we put the U-shaped clamp on top of the workpiece and seal it due to the wedge or gasket.

Trick number 6:
How to manually drill holes at the perfect right angle? Yes, very simple!
Suppose you do not have a drilling machine, but only a hand drill. Then take a wooden block and cut him a small corner. It will be just 90 degrees.

Now place the drill in this corner and drill. It will not be a perfect 90-degree angle, but very close to that.

If you don’t have the opportunity to cut such a part, you can take two blocks of lumber with smooth edges and fasten them together so that a step forms. And reinsert the drill into this caliper? / Nest. The hole will be exactly at right angles.

If you have a drilling machine, but you want to drill a hole in the middle of the part, where the machine does not reach, you have another great option. Choose the drill with which you will make a hole. Insert it into the drilling machine, place the bar and make a hole in it.

Then, on the desired part with a core, make a notch in the place where the hole should be. Insert the same drill already into the drill, pass it through the hole in the bar and boldly drill.

Trick number 7:
Your beloved, indispensable knife has become slightly dull, not quite at all, but you would like to “guide” the blade. Take a ceramic cup, such as a coffee cup. Different cups can have very different abrasive edges. Pick the smallest one.
Check that the cup is empty. If not, be sure to finish it) Turn it upside down, and use the bottom edge as a whetstone. The same can be done with kitchen knives. Do not forget about caution, and ... yes, use ceramic dishes! This method is good for "pointing" the blade and does not replace the main sharpening. It is important to maintain the correct blade angle.

Trick number 8:
Easy redecoration - you took a picture or moved it to another place, an unfortunate hole remained in place of the screwed out screw. Do not rush to go to the hardware store for putty. Take a little toothpaste and rub it into the hole. This works great if the hole is small. After 2 hours on top of the paste, you can put a layer of paint in tone with the wall. It is possible that the wall will emit a light menthol flavor.
