In this article, Steve, author of the YouTube channel "Steve Ramsey - Woodworking for Mere Mortals", tells you how easy it is to make an "perpetual calendar."
So, the master will share with you the secret of how to make an eternal calendar. Sounds tempting, doesn't it? The calendar structures and organizes our whole life. But it is important not only its presence, but also its execution.
Materials
- Plexiglass or plexiglass
- cherry boards
- PVA glue
- Vinyl spray paint.
Instruments, used by the author.
- clamps
- Electric jigsaw
- A circular saw
- scissors
- Milling machine
- Screwdriver, drill
- A ruler, a pencil, a square, a rubber spatula.
Manufacturing process.
For this project, the author takes several planks of cherry wood. This board has already been sawn 8 mm thick. The other two boards will form the base of the structure. They are already cut to the desired length.
On a milling machine, Steve cuts a profile around the perimeter of wooden parts.
Then he will have to make a small cut, into which the glass front of the calendar will stand. To do this, the master sets the blade of the circular disk at an angle of 15 degrees.
Steve’s workshop found a small glass of suitable sizes. The author removed it from the photo frame. Such a framework is quite inexpensive. It is advisable to use plexiglass or plexiglass, because the perimeter of the glass will not be protected by anything.
Initially, the author was going to use two boards to base the calendar. But after he inserted the glass into a groove specially made for him, he noted that one board is also quite stable and stable.
Also, at first Steve wanted to put all the numbers on a wooden panel, but, on reflection, he realized that for this he would have to buy a laser engraver - and this little thing costs a lot of money. Another idea was to use an inkjet printer, but in this case the numbers would not be as clear and accurate as they should be.
The author has a third solution: a vinyl cutter, a plotter, which is in any company for the manufacture of signs and advertising. In one of them, the author makes an order by providing an employee with a file with a calendar layout.
Now all that remains is to transfer the numbers and letters to wood or glass. Steve prefers glass as the base - it looks cooler! From the lining sheet, the author takes images onto the transport film.
Steve made a marking on the film so that there was a frame / border around the entire perimeter of the sheet, which will help him further adjust the size of the layout to the size of the glass.
Next, Steve will need a polishing tool or a plastic spatula to properly push through all of these characters.
Now it’s important not to drag the film, but to peel it off the glass. Several signs still stuck on the transport film. The author pastes them manually. And so, what happened! The author originally wanted to glue the numbers on the back of the glass, but their adhesive surface is too gray.
Now it remains only to make a slider - a frame.
First, he cuts a draft window from paper to make sure that it is a suitable size. Then he transfers all the parameters to a wooden board.
Even before the author cuts out the window in the plank, he cuts out a couple of small planks from the same board to make the slider bar out of them.
Now, with an electric jigsaw, Steve cuts a window, having previously done four entry points on the board.
Then it wipes the cuts with sandpaper.
Then he sticks the bar. He sawed it in such a way that the wood fibers in it went in the direction perpendicular to the direction of the fibers on the board. So the whole part will become more stiff, and the window will not bend.
Then he glues the last element, and the clamp / terminal is ready.
Polishes all the edges of the frame on the orbital machine.
It remains only to apply a layer of vinyl varnish.
And stick the days of the week.
Your perpetual calendar is ready!
