Manufacturing process.
So, the author found an old extra vernier caliper.
Then the author saws off part of the sponges with a grinder.
He also found a suitable bearing.
Cut into it part of the outer ring.
Using a neodymium magnet, he removed the balls and removed the workpiece.
I tried it on my lips, and made two such incisions.
Then he welded the workpiece to the jaws.
The author got such a design.
Now he just cuts the ring in the center.
And hones the edges of new sponges.
Sponges are not specially sharpened to the very end.
Using sandpaper of the 1000th grid, the sponges are brought to a perfect connection.
Now you can see what this tool is capable of. They cannot measure such things.
But in such cases, a conventional vernier caliper can no longer cope with the task.
