440C Hardened Steel Kitchen Knife (59HRC)

Hello fans to craft, today we will analyze how to make a quality kitchen knife. Such homemade will be appreciated by your hostess, and the owner will be pleased to have such a knife in the kitchen. The blade is made of already well hardened quality steel. The grade of steel used is 440C; it has a hardness of 59HRC. To work with already hardened steel, special machines are needed, as hand tools can no longer cope here. So, for grinding steel, you need a belt grinder, and for cutting you can use a grinder. As for the pen, it can already be cut with simpler tools, it is made of wood. If the home-made you are interested in, I propose to study the project in more detail!

Materials and tools used by the author:

Material List:
- hardened steel 440C;
- wood for the handle;
- epoxy adhesive;
- brass for bolster;
- brass rod for the pin;
- oil for wood.

Tool List:
- clamps;
- grinder;
- belt sander;
- drill or drilling machine;
- milling cutter;
- tape cutting machine;
- vise;
- files and files;
- polishing machine
- .

The process of making a knife:

Step one. Cut the main profile
We take the paper and draw by hand the desired shape for the kitchen knife. Next, cut out the template from paper and transfer it to the steel billet. After that, you can start cutting, clamp the workpiece with clamps on the table and arm ourselves with a grinder. When working with hardened steel, one must not forget that temperature is our enemy. If the metal is overheated, the steel will be released and it will need to be tempered again. To prevent overheating, when cutting steel must be watered with water, water will evaporate when evaporated. And thanks to the water, you will monitor how much the metal heats up.

Particularly carefully and slowly, we cut off the part where the blade will be, here overheating is unacceptable, otherwise the blade will quickly blunt like a raw raw.

Step Two Bevels
We proceed to the formation of bevels, here we need a belt sander. Do not forget that when grinding, the blade can also become very hot, so we work with water. The bevels should be as wide as possible, then the blade will be thin and smooth, which will allow the knife to be easily sharpened and flawlessly cut.

The author did not grind the butt but the knife seems forged, everything looks great.The polished surface can then be polished to a mirror finish.

Step Three Bolster
We make the front part of the handle, here we need a piece of brass. It will be necessary to make a slit hole in it so that the knife shank fits tightly. To begin with, the author drills several holes in the workpiece, and then combines them with a file. Having worked a little more with a file, it turns out an excellent slotted hole in the part.

Step Four Handle manufacture and installation
We make a handle for a knife, we are looking for a suitable wood for a handle with a beautiful pattern. We need a board of suitable thickness, cut it lengthwise into two halves. Inside each half, you need to make a recess under the tail of the knife. For such work, we need a router.

Next, you need to modify the shank of the knife a little, on it you need to make notches with a grinder to get a strong adhesive connection. You can also drill a pin hole in the shank if you have a drill that can handle hardened steel. However, the tail of the knife can be released.

You can install the handle, degrease the shank, and wrap the blade with tape or masking tape so as not to smear it with glue. We put glue on the shank, coat it with grooves and linings, and then collect the handle and tighten everything well with clamps. For reliability, the author also installed a pin in the handle. Leave the glue to dry for a day, and the quick-drying glue will dry faster.

Step Five Final touches
When the glue is completely dry, you can proceed to grinding the handle. To begin with, we need to create the necessary profile, we work on a belt sander, gradually reducing the grain size of the sanding belt. Next, we turn to manual processing, we work with sandpaper, the task is to bring the pen to a perfectly smooth state.

And after grinding, the handle can be polished on a polishing machine, as a result, it will become perfectly smooth. Now it remains to soak the tree with oil, which emphasizes the beauty of the wood.

The knife is ready, it remains to sharpen the blade, here you will be helped by a manual sharpening machine with grindstones, which can be ordered from China. The author did not show us the knife tests, but everything should be fine, since high-quality steel was used here. The knife also looks flawless, antique. I hope you enjoyed the project and found useful thoughts and ideas for yourself. Good luck and creative inspiration, do not forget to share your ideas and homemade things with us!
