Unusual saw blade hatchet


I welcome the fans to craft, today we will consider how to make an unusual knife-ax, they can easily chop and cut. The feature of the product is that the knife has three blades. The source material for the manufacture homemade served as an old circular saw blade. In general, such discs can be an excellent source of carbon steel, but bad metal is found in modern discs. So it is better to choose old disks for such purposes and check in advance whether steel is hardened. It is not difficult to make a hatchet, however, you have a lot of grinding work to do, so it’s useful to have a belt grinder for such purposes. Materials and tools used by the author:

Material List:
- a disk from a circular saw;
- epoxy adhesive;
- board (for overlays);
- brass rods (for pins);
- oil for wood impregnation.

Tool List:
- tape cutting machine (or hacksaw);
- belt sander;
- a drilling machine or drill;
- files;
- solution for etching;
- grinder;
- clamps;
- drawing tool;
- oven, oil, oven;
- sandpaper.

Homemade manufacturing process:

Step one. Cut the hatchet profile
First, we make a hatchet template so that you do not have to improvise in the process. We cut it out of paper and transfer the drawing to the workpiece, in our case this is a piece of a circular saw blade. After that, you can start cutting, the author works as a grinder. Bends and other similar places where you can’t crawl the disc of the grinder, cut into pieces. Then the profile can be trimmed with a thick grinding wheel.
And where it is not possible to work as a grinder at all, we modify these areas with files or a drill, if available. On this we must assure the process of manufacturing the profile.







Step Two Bevels
We proceed to the manufacture of bevels on an ax, in total on an ax there are two main blades large in length. If desired, you can also make a small blade in the bow, in the end we get three cutting edges. The author makes bevels almost by eye, using a belt sander. Everything turns out fine, but if there is no experience, it is better to do the markup first.



Step Three Quenching
If the ax is completely ready, you can harden it, so that the steel becomes strong, and the ax does not blunt for a long time. Before hardening, do not forget to drill holes in the handle for the pins. We heat the product and dip in oil.If you do not know what steel grade is used and how to harden it, it is better to first conduct several experiments with small pieces of this steel.

After hardening, the steel must be let go, as the metal will be brittle, and the hatchet can fly to pieces at the first impact. Here we need an oven, the temperature should be around 200 degrees Celsius. Such a massive knife needs to be heated for at least 2 hours, the metal should be evenly covered with a straw or yellowish patina.


Step Four Etching
After heat treatment, we grind the metal to a shine, then the author is armed with a grinder with a thick grinding disc. Using a grinder, we put serifs on the hatchet, in the end we get an interesting pattern that will simulate forging.

When everything is ready, immerse the hatchet in the etching liquid, over time it will turn black. Having washed the hatchet well, we perform light grinding by hand with sandpaper, after which the ax will be ready.









Step Five Pads and handle assembly
We cut the pads in the shape of a handle from a board of a beautiful breed of wood. For cutting, you can use a tape cutting machine or a jigsaw. When the pads are ready, glue them to the handle using epoxy glue. As pins, you can use brass rods, nails, tubes and so on to your taste.

As soon as the glue dries, we attach the desired profile to the handle with a file, and then proceed to finer processing using sandpaper. We make the handle perfectly smooth and saturate the tree with oil. As a result, the handle looks great, and the wood is protected from moisture.
