What can be done from an old computer?

Have you got a dusty old computer in the corner for a long time? I, I think you will be able to give a second life to the components of your device. Today we’ll try to slightly alter the computer power supply to your needs. The most demanded supply voltage of many homemade and tools powered by constant current sources are 3.3 volts, 5.0 volts and 12 volts. A current is preferably 10 amperes. All this is present in the computer power supply.

Our main task, in the manufacture of the power supply, is to determine the necessary wires in the harness, to find a block or connector for connecting the power output.

And so we will need from the details - the old computer power supply, a block or connector and a switch (if there is none in the computer power supply).

Of the tools and supplies we need - a soldering iron, a screwdriver, a cutting machine, a file, solder and rosin or soldering acid.

The manufacturing process is as follows:

1. Disassemble the computer power supply.
2. Solder the extra wires (Details are in the video).
2. We prepare a regular place for the voltage transfer pad.
3. We solder a block (it is in detail stated in a video).
4. We regularly assemble the power supply.
5. Check the operation of the unit, remove the voltage from the distribution pads.
6. We use it.

Video clip alteration of the computer power supply to fit your needs.

This unit can even be assembled by a beginner electrician, incl. go for it.

The request to visitors for whom these are the elementary basics of electrics is not to get smart and not naughty (someone writes computer programs, someone searches for familiar buttons on the keyboard), if you all know this, just pass by, respect people. Everyone has a different background and knowledge base, it can come in handy for someone and I will be just glad. Thanks you.

As in this block, you can increase the voltage from 12 to 14.5 volts, without much bothering.

Yes, soldering acid and electronics are not compatible.

It is better to use rosin or liquid flux LTI-120. (neutral).

But you can just rinse after soldering with a solvent.

I use a lot of active ones in my work, such as solder fat and even FIM.

This FIM easily solders boring bronze and stainless steel! xaxa . Recently, I restored the collapsed temple of glasses. Very rare points, other masters did not undertake this work.

But, I repeat, washing is necessary after active fluxes.

Soldering acid and electronics are incompatible! Only rosin / non-wash fluxes. And with acid it is better to solder the leaky iron TVZ

As in this block you can increase the voltage from 12 to 14.5 volts, ...

Easy, give it a scheme and many will show what to regulate

They lit up an empty grater, but where about the old computer? Only about the power supply unrolled, and what of the rest?

Why are you so suspicious, Konstantin? A clip from my channel, and I was an electrician once, and even of the 6th category, and I shot this clip myself, and if you want the next clip will be dedicated to you, right in the title ... The goal is to expand the discussion, the goal is achieved ...

Regarding the replacement of electrolytes, the comrade wrote everything correctly. They have a certain resource and over time they lose capacity and they have an ESR floating away. Both that and another leads to the fact that the unit begins to work unstably. It happens that it goes out of order. For each block, this is different. If the temperature load is high, they will dry faster.
As for the alteration itself, it deserves the right to life, of course. The only bad thing is that the author of the article simply parasitizes at the work of the author of the video. He himself, as I understand it, has no special idea of what is shown in the video.
The article itself is simply about nothing. Absolutely empty.

every 5-10 years, depending on the load, use and quality of electrolytes.
and from time to time "no load" too, the electrolytic layer without the application of voltage slowly degrades, then the truth quickly enough "grows" back.
the term is long but quite real.
on a working computer it usually manifests itself as "brakes" when turned on, it does not turn on the first time, etc. and at the same time, “warming up” the computer works normally without failures.
went through a bunch of old computers from the company's warehouse - 80% of the problems in dead electrolytes.

correctly noticed, if you do not re-solder then it will cause trouble instead of benefit.
Use laptops. there will be no problems
And I use the power supply from old laptops, to the DC / DC output and the current / voltage indicator! smile

This is how the motherboard works, and the PSU turns on / off by closing-opening contact 14 (green) to the ground.

For 10 years I have been using decommissioned obsolete BP ATX for powering SD tapes. A current of 10-16 A is enough for 3-4 tapes 5730 for a greenhouse seedlings. I shrink the green and black inside the case, I bring out the paired yellow + black and put them on my mother-father connector for the screw for SD.I bite out the remaining wires under the root. The procedure is about 10 minutes. There were no problems with air conditioners.
Cables directing to SD, magnets in it, power supply, etc. - in modelism
Use laptops. there will be no problems HAHAHA. Sarcasm if that.
I have been using BP ancient for 12 years. Green with a black paper clip is shorted. scratch
Okay. I will not say anything. ya_dobryi Yes, even a 20-ku from 24ki distinguish? And in general, AT from ATX =)))))

I have been working with the AT format power supply unit together with the car radio since 2006. True, I do not turn it on often. And everything plows fine.

Advice on replacing capacitors was not superfluous. No matter how beautiful they look and even if their capacity does not fall. In impulse blocks, their reactance is more important.

Advice on replacing electrolytes is bullshit. Following this advice all the more should periodically change the electrolytes in computers. And what is the period? Every week, month, year? And still they will die in a few days))) Bullshit)))
Guest Sergey
My system specialist is over 10 years old. Therefore, how can we say that the conders on the power unit will die in a day, two or a month))))
To start, you need to touch, (it is better to use the button), pressing the shutdown button again
When PC-ON is closed to zero, the power supply starts up; when it is opened, the power supply turns off! smile
Not reactive, but equivalent series resistance (EPS). Reactive there anyway.

The green wire connects to the black, either directly or through a switch. This is indicated and shown in the video clip :-)))
Guest Victor
The power supply turns on remotely !!! It is not enough just to supply 220V, and get 3.3V, 5V and 12V at the output. The green wire in the loop must be connected to ground, otherwise the unit will not turn on !!!
Author
Oddly enough, everything is wonderful with capacitors. The block is about 5 years old. Thanks for the advice, took note ...
Arthur
First, solder all the electrolytic capacitors, or at least those standing at the entrance of the high-voltage bridge and at the output of the unit, at voltages + 5V and + 12V. Most likely they have either “dried up” and become bloated or will do it in a few days of “suddenly new” operation, otherwise they won’t be able to use the new craft for a long time ... :))))
