Hello everyone, I propose to get acquainted with the author who has been making wonderful knives for many years. Specifically in this article we will look at how quality kitchen knives are made. The handle of such a knife is made of wood, but it is stabilized, so the material is not afraid of water, it is very strong and looks elegant. In the old fashioned manner, the author makes pens from formations on birches and other trees (suvel, cap, and so on).
As for the blade, it is made of steel 40X9C2 or U8A. The blades are made by forging, so that the author’s material costs are negligible, and the knives are very high quality. If you are interested in the project, I propose to study it in more detail!
Materials and tools used by the author:
Material List:
- suitable steel for the blade;
- suvel or cap;
- liquid for wood stabilization;
- sheet brass for bolster;
- oil for wood;
- epoxy adhesive.
Tool List:
- blacksmith furnace and forging tools;
- oil for hardening;
- belt sander;
- drill;
- files and files;
- grinder;
- welding machine;
- sandpaper.
The process of making a knife:
Step one. Forging
The author makes each blade by forging, a small piece of carbon steel is used as the starting material, to which a piece of reinforcement is welded as a handle. Well, then it all depends on time and effort, the author forms a blade from a piece of steel quite quickly, but of course he already has a lot of experience. If there is an electric hammer, then such a knife will make it much easier and faster. As a result, the shank will remain pulled, and now we have an excellent primary knife profile. If desired, immediately after forging, the blade can be quenched in oil, but then it will be more difficult to process.
Step Two Grinding
After forging, the blade is polished to remove all defects. On the contour it can be processed with a grinder with a thick grinding disc, but we grind the planes on a tape machine. To make the blade easier to handle, it must first be released in the oven.
After that comes fine manual processing. We take fine sandpaper and grind the blade to a mirror shine. To fine sandpaper worked better, it can be moistened with soapy water, WD-40 and so on.
Step Three Bolster
The author makes a brass bolster for his knife. A piece of sheet brass is cut to the desired shape and we make a slotted hole for the knife shank.To make such a hole, it is useful to get a drill, but many cope with a drill and needle files. At the end, the author makes dents on brass to make a bolster to the forged style. This whole thing looks quite interesting.
Step Four Wood normalization
The author’s knife handle is made of normalized wood; the author makes such wood himself. To do this, we need a vacuum chamber, we can adapt for such purposes an ordinary can with a pump. We pour a solution in the jar to normalize, it can be oil, varnish, epoxy resin or another substance. The bottom line is that the tree is well saturated, moisture comes out of it, and then the impregnation hardens and the tree becomes strong and beautiful.
After the vacuum chamber, the author wraps the workpiece in foil and sends it to dry in a furnace at a temperature of 100 ° C.
Step Five Knife assembly
When the workpiece for the handle is ready, install it on the blade, use epoxy as the glue. After drying, we give the handle the desired shape on a belt grinder, and then bring the wood to a perfectly smooth state by manually grinding with sandpaper.
That's all, the pen is ready, cover it with oil, now the pen looks fantastic. The knife is ready, if desired, it can be sharpened to a razor condition with sharpening stones.
On this our review is over, I hope you liked the project, and you found useful information for yourself. Good luck and creative inspiration, if you decide to repeat this. Do not forget to share your ideas with us and homemade!
