Sooner or later, your child will certainly require you to have your own bed, "like an adult."
You can always buy a suitable bed for your baby in the nearest furniture room, but it’s much more fun to make it do it yourselfso that the child can participate in the process.
This bed is made of wood. All parts are pre-painted, so assembly and installation can be safely carried out with the child in the nursery.
In order to make a wooden bed for a boy with your own hands you will need:
Materials:
- a wooden block with a section of 30 x 50 mm or 30 x 60 mm for the manufacture of a frame;
- slats or wooden board for the base under the mattress;
- non-thick boards for overlapping;
- wooden boards for wall cladding;
- screws and nails;
- oil stain of a gray shade;
- mattress with spring unit.
Instruments:
- miter saw or circular;
- drill;
- screwdriver;
- a grinder or sandpaper with a grain of at least 180;
- a hammer or pneumatic nail gun;
- painting supplies (brushes and soft tissue without lint);
- square;
- building tape measure and pencil.
Step One: Drawing Up
Decide on the size of the finished bed. To do this, you must know how old the child will sleep in it. In any case, the bed should be relatively spacious, "for growth."
Make a drawing using computer models from the master class.
Step Two: Select Materials
If the choice of lumber is more or less clear, then the choice of paints and varnishes will have to tinker with. The coating should be resistant, easy to wash and at the same time harmless to the child.
The author used an oil stain. It penetrates the surface of the wood, preserving it and reliably protecting it from moisture, fungus, mold and rot.
The stain is based on mineral oils and solvent and has an unpleasant odor. However, after drying, it does not emit any extraneous odors and is absolutely safe for human health.
Step Three: Preparing Parts for Assembly
Any, even the highest quality planed wood requires finishing polishing. Use for this any grinder that is on the farm, or sandpaper with a grain of at least 180.
The author uses the simplest and most elementary options for fixing parts, the implementation of which will not be difficult even for a beginner.
Mark the locations of the fasteners and make holes with a drill so that the wood does not crack along the fibers during the screwing process.
Step Four: Pre-Painting
Since the bed is a dimensional product and will be assembled directly in the nursery, the details should be pre-painted and thoroughly dried until the unpleasant odor disappears.
The author chose an oil-based stain for this. It is applied to the surface of the tree in two ways:
1) at the first stain is applied with a brush, and its excess is immediately removed with a cloth;
2) in the second case, the stain is rubbed with a cloth until the desired shade is obtained.
In any case, the excess should be removed from the surface of the tree.
Drying will take from one day to 2 days - depending on temperature and humidity. You can check the readiness by touch. In addition, a fully dried coating should not produce an unpleasant odor.
Step Five: Assembling the Bed
The assembly of the bed takes place directly on the spot. Prepare all the necessary parts and start by assembling the frame.
Assemble the two panels - racks and connect them with transverse jumpers.
Sheathe the sidewalls with boards and sheathe the base under the ceiling. At this point, the design will gain some rigidity.
Sheathe the front part and make the overlap. To fix the boards, you can use small nails.
The back of the bed according to plan is immediately opposite the window, so it will remain open.
Step Six: foundation design and mattress selection
For the base under the mattress, the author used ordinary wooden bars. For the same purpose, you can purchase ready-made lamella blocks with mounts. It is proved that lamellas significantly extend the life of expensive orthopedic mattresses.
Finally, choose the right mattress. Actually, the manufacture of a bed should begin with the choice of a mattress of a certain size, since the manufacture of a mattress to order is an expensive affair.
Mattresses with a spring block are mainly of two types: with dependent springs and with independent ones. Which one to choose is a topic for a separate article. :)
If you decide to use a springless mattress, the bed base should be solid. As a rule, a plywood sheet or chipboard is used for this.
