Knife-hatchet for the kitchen and not only

Hello to judges of knives, today we will make useful homemade for kitchen and household purposes. With this knife, you can crush products, including meat with bones, they can easily sharpen sticks, remove the bark and perform various other household tasks. The knife looks quite interesting, the author hardened the blade, so the blade should hold the sharpening for a long time. Made everything accessible tools literally on the knee. There is a lot of work on grinding, the author coped with the task with the help of a grinder, as well as with a grinder. If you are interested in the project, I suggest that you familiarize yourself with the homemade product in more detail!

Materials and tools used by the author:

Material List:
- a piece of steel for the blade;
- a board for overlays;
- epoxy adhesive;
- superglue or oil for wood;
- copper tubes.

Tool List:
- grinder;
- a hacksaw;
- grinding and polishing machine;
- drill;
- clamps;
- oven, oil (for hardening);
- sandpaper.

The process of making a knife:

Step one. Main profile
First of all, we cut out the main profile of the knife, for such purposes you will need to find a piece of carbon steel. In appearance, the author’s workpiece resembles a car spring, but such steel is poorly sharpened, although it is quite strong.

We draw the desired shape of the knife on the metal and proceed to cutting. The author works as a grinder, problem areas can be cut into pieces, as the grinder can cut only in a straight line. Cut out the contour with a thick grinding disc.

Step Two Slopes
Now we pass to the most difficult and longest occupation - the formation of descents. Our product is quite massive, and the slopes need to be made quite wide. To begin with, we draw a central line along the future blade, it is on this line that we will be guided in order to get the same amount of metal on both sides.

We clamp the blade on the table with a clamp and arm ourselves with a grinder. For work, you need a thick disk for grinding work, you can also use a petal nozzle. There is no need to rush so as not to remove excess metal.Slowly, step by step, the author makes the descents wider. The author carries out the final grinding work with the help of an improvised rotary grinding machine.

Step Three A pen
It is necessary to modify the handle of the knife, select a certain amount of metal to facilitate the handle. In addition, such a groove will allow the handle to be more securely glued. We drill holes for the pins, because after hardening it will be very difficult to do.

Step Four Quenching
When the blade is ready, it is possible to harden steel. First, we heat the oil, the author heats it with red-hot glands. When hardened in warm oil, the chances of the blade leading or cracking the blade are reduced. Well, then we heat the blade to a red glow and lower it into oil.

If the steel is hardened, it should emit a characteristic ring, and the hardened steel will not be taken with a file. Further, the author made a vacation of steel, holding the blade for some time over the coals. Usually, when tempered, the steel is covered with a yellow coating, the color resembles the color of straw.
After hardening, we carry out grinding of the knife in order to remove the burnt and scale.

Step Five A pen
For the pen, you need to make two pads, we look for a board of suitable thickness for such purposes and cut out the approximate outline of the pen. Next, the workpiece is cut into two parts, as a result, we get two identical parts, drill holes and grind the planes that will lie on the knife handle.

We also prepare pins, for such purposes the author uses copper tubes.

That's all, the handle can be assembled, classically this is done with epoxy glue. Degrease the metal, apply glue and tighten the handle until the glue dries.

Step Six The final
The glue has dried, now we carry out the primary processing of the handle on a rotary grinding machine. At this stage, we need to set the main profile of the handle, we can cope with this task with the help of files.

Further, the author uses a drill as a drill in order to handle hard-to-reach places of the handle. That's all, at the end we perform the fine processing of the handle manually using sandpaper.

Now the pen remains to be impregnated with oil to protect it from water, but judging by the video, the author impregnates the pen with superglue.

The knife is ready, we sharpen the blade on the grindstone. The author turned out to be very sharp, he easily cuts paper. Such a homemade product will also cut perfectly, and the blade should remain sharp for a long time if the author used high-quality steel. Later, the author made original scabbard for homemade wood, but the process of their manufacture was not shown.

On this project is over, I hope you liked the homemade. Good luck and creative inspiration if you decide to repeat a similar project. Do not forget to share your ideas and homemade products with us as well!

Everything is correct. After quenching, low-temperature tempering is performed to reduce brittleness.

After steel hardening, it is necessary to produce not a vacation, normalization!
