Many of you like unusual design solutions.
In this article, Sergey, the author of the SteelWood YouTube channel, will tell you how from an old Soviet alarm clock and some cycling trash make a stylish alarm clock in dieselpunk style.
Such an alarm clock will clearly appeal to auto mechanics and cycling enthusiasts.
Materials
- Old bicycle gears and chains
- Alarm clock "Vityaz", or similar
- Studs, cap nuts, washers
- Transparent spray varnish.
Instruments, used by the author.
- Pliers, screwdrivers, pliers, ruler, marker

- A semicircular file.
Manufacturing process.
So, the author acquired an old alarm clock from the times of the USSR, the Vityaz company. He is in working condition.
And for this homemade product, of course, will have to be disassembled. In addition to the cogs, arrows, mechanism and back cover - nothing is needed.
This is how the mechanism itself looks like with a dial and hands. They also need to be removed.
The front cover of the mechanism will also hinder the author, it must be removed very carefully so that nothing falls apart.
The problem is that the cover presses the gear group. But there will be enough and diagonal details, which the author cuts out of it.
Replaces the “modified” cover.
Next, the front and back "covers" are required. He will make them out of two bicycle gears with a diameter of 100 mm. One of them has already been used for homemade work, but only the outer ring with teeth is required of it. To purchase such gears it is not necessary to buy new ones. Just go to the bike repair shop. There, "killed" gears are simply thrown away for scrap. In the same place you can get old chains.
After trimming and cleaning, these are the details.
The author was afraid that the gear would be made of hardened steel, but nothing worked out, and even managed to modify the inner circle with a regular semicircular file.
Now you need a bicycle chain. The master tries on it, and disconnects the links.
It turned out two chains of just 12 links each, and for the watch dial it is ideal. Puts the chain in place and inserts the pin.
It fixes chains on both workpieces, gripping welding at four points.
Next, you need a couple of mounting screws on which to install the computer motherboard. The author screws them onto the two remaining studs from the front cover. It is to these screws that the front cover of the watch will be screwed.
In order to install the cover in it, it is necessary to drill two holes with a diameter of 3 mm at a distance of 70 mm.
The holes are ready, and you can put a test cover.
The author was afraid that the arrows might not fall into place, but nothing happened, and the sizes came up.
Now it's the turn of the back cover.
Since it, in addition to the protective function, also serves as a bell, it needs to be seized by welding only two points, otherwise the sound will be deaf.
Everything is ready, and the back cover is successfully screwed onto two regular screws.
But still it is necessary to additionally connect the front and rear chains, and at the same time form the legs. To do this, the master dismantled the motorcycle chain, pulling several internal links out of it.
Then he assembled such a design of a blind nut, chain link and stud.
One link was welded to the back of the front cover, and the second to the back cover. The excess stud was cut off by a grinder.
Two legs are now welded to these places.
After the trial assembly, the future alarm clock looks like this.
The legs turned out to be successful, and they do not even allow the case to touch the table.
Next, the master marked out the places for the clock marks, drilled holes and twisted the screws in them. The excess thread of screws on the back side was cut off by a grinder.
It remains only to disassemble the watch, to cover the manufactured parts with a transparent aerosol varnish. The master repainted the hour and minute hands in red so that they stand out against the background of the dial. And he left the arrow of the alarm clock golden.
That's all, steampunk design is ready!
Thanks to the author for a simple but interesting design solution for watches!
