I recently found out about the presence on the market, and indeed about such an opportunity as such, such as silicone, cork, or, as I have now home-made manufacture of lining for rim led brakes. I became interested in this after acquiring a bicycle with white-painted wheel rims. In the original configuration bike It went without front brakes, only the rear foot, so the manufacturer was calm for such rims. However, braking the bike is not as effective as we would like.
Having searched the Internet, I usually search immediately in the Chinese hypermarket Aliexpress, I find the most suitable version of the material for me (I don’t know for sure about the size yet) here are the replacement pads. But this product will go a long time before me, and I want the brakes now.
Having tried several options, I stopped so far on the most advantageous option - an eraser for pencils of the Koh-I-Noor brand, 35 mm long and 7.5 mm high, 13 mm wide. (this is already a modern size).
If you have tick-type rim brakes like mine, then you will be able to repeat exactly my homemade if necessary.
First you need to remove the old solid rubber brakes from the metal holding base with the same pincers or pliers, squeezing them from the narrow sides and they practically come out of their base. You can help them get out faster with a flat screwdriver.
The following tools will be needed for the entire replacement process:
- a construction knife,
- passatigi or gas key,
- flat screwdriver
- and of course the brake pads themselves, only those that can release metal plates that hold the hard rubber of conventional brakes.
I immediately made one block for checking from a long-bought eraser. I cut it on both sides and adjusted it in width. The second eraser was bought at a local stationery store for 10 rubles. for pieces, which turned out to be shorter in length, almost flush.

Adjust the eraser to the width of the metal base, cutting the excess with a sharp knife.
Compression of the eraser from the sides, the main thing is not to overdo it. The eraser may break and become unusable in the future.
The whole alteration ends with the installation of new pads back into the brake mechanism on the bicycle in the usual way, so that the entire area of the eraser touches the rim during braking.
It is worth saying that my idea is justifying itself. Braking is carried out adequately at low speed. And even in appearance they are very practical, as there is a white strip by which you can judge the wear of the pads. Nevertheless, the eraser is a soft material and even a painted smooth rim with frequent use will quickly fail. How fast this will happen will show its application. However, I bought a couple more of ten ruble erasers until they eventually shrank in size even larger. Or I will order industrial production of pads with, on which you will probably also have to make a little self-make.
