DIY roll for gluing veneer

Hello dear readers andthe inhabitants of our site!
Some specific work requires a special, high-quality tool.
In this article, the author of the YouTube channel Oleg Pevtsov will tell you how he made a special rolling roller for veneers.

This homemade product can be used for other purposes, for example, for rolling wallpaper seams. But this is a secondary method of application.

Materials
- Two handles from the rollers
- Brass blank
- Mahogany board
- Two-component epoxy resin
- Wood veneer
- sheet plywood
- Contact adhesive
- Sandpaper
— .

Instruments, used by the author.
- Lathe
—
-, cutting disc
- A circular saw
—
- Pliers, hammer.

Manufacturing process.
The master originally used to veneer the veneer with such a sharpened piece of plywood. But this is a very moody tool that gives a lot of marriage.

After that, Oleg bought just such a roller in the store. Its notch also leaves serious surface damage and is not suitable for such work.

In the end, he decided to make his own tool do it yourself. First of all, he bought two cheap paint roller handles. Heated the plastic handle with a technical hairdryer, pulled out the steel core with pliers.

I made a cylinder from a brass blank, drilled a hole, and made descents at its edges.

The result is such a simple brass cushion.

Then he cut the holders to the required length with a grinder.

This is how the design will be assembled. The author will not use any bearings.

From a solid mahogany tree I cut a bar - a blank for the handle.

I turned it into a cylindrical shape, drilled holes on both sides, and made a groove for the crimp ring.

Slightly finalized the design of the holders, and welded them at the base.

This is how the mechanism will be installed in the handle.

Now Oleg began to manufacture a crimp ring. He made a blank for him.

Then he made a small notch dremel inside the ring.

He greased the seat for the ring with two-component resin, and pressed it in. Excess resin removed with rags.

He aligned the end face of the instrument, and made a slight rounding.

Now he is making a fungus-shaped handle shaft from brass.

Fills epoxy into the hole, and presses the handle onto the shank.

It remains to make the shape of the handle more ergonomic, and remove excess wood. He then sanded the surface with sandpaper.

Now you can cut the shank, and grind its end.

The handle is almost ready, you need to soak the wood with linseed oil to protect it from moisture.

The roller holder lubricates with epoxy, connects it to the handle, and fills the resin, filling the voids.

After a day, the resin polymerized, and the oil was completely absorbed into the wood.

Now you can compare these two tools at work!

The master covers the veneer with contact adhesive on the back, and also the plywood sheet.

After five minutes of drying, lay out a sheet of veneer on plywood, and roll it with a roller. It is very convenient for them to work even when rolling the edges. Oleg believes that much less effort is spent, and the quality of gluing is just perfect. As you can see, nothing happened to the tool.

But a piece of plywood can be immediately sent for grinding. The edge of plywood and veneer left a deep indentation on its working surface. Now, when smoothing even surfaces, it will leave a mark.

It was such dents that the instrument made of plywood left.

Of course, this roller can be made in other sizes, depending on your tasks. But with its small width, the effort of pressing the veneer is just enough for high-quality gluing, and long-term work with it without much stress. If it is made twice as wide, then the effort will have to be applied twice as much.
Thanks to the author for the idea of a simple but useful fixtures for the workshop!

All good mood, good luck, and interesting ideas!
