Manufacturing process.
First of all, the author selects a suitable wooden block for the future handle of the knife, he chooses maple wood. On a drilling machine, drills a hole in the center of the bar.
Then outlines in general terms, and gives the handle the desired shape. First, it processes two opposite faces, cutting them in an arc.
It also processes the two remaining ones.
The drill itself was sharpened more than once and, in the end, its sharp protruding edges were worn so much that they actually merged with the central axial shaft. So much the better for this project.
From this material, the author decides to carve a knife blade. Using a grinder with a stripping disk, John grinds the shank of the drill, and gives it a flattened shape.
During the processing of steel, the master is not afraid to overheat it, because, as you know, the drill shank itself is not as hardened as its cutting edges.
By expanding the blade vertically, it gives the blade the desired profile.
Moreover, the author also intends to harden the blade himself. It alternately heats and abruptly cools high-carbon steel. Heating is carried out on a gas burner, cooling in a bath with oil.
Then the blade warms up at a low temperature, up to about 400 ° C. The last operation allows you to let go of steel, as a result, the blade of the knife will become less fragile.
This is followed by cleaning and polishing the surface of the blade. He uses water stones for finishing sharpening.
In order to securely fasten the blade in the handle, John uses polyurethane adhesive.
The handle is finally ground by hand with sandpaper, excess glue is removed.
To give the wooden handle a deep tone and emphasize the woody pattern, the author applies several layers of linseed oil to the handle.
And this is how the knife behaves in work.
Thanks to the author for the idea of a simple working knife from an old drill!
All good mood, good luck, and interesting ideas!
