Yakutian knife from steel X12MF

Hello everyone! Taiga is a dream for any real hunter. This is the place where blood boils, adrenaline rages from potential dangers and future adventures, and the thirst for prey is spurred by the richness and diversity of the animal world. In addition, it is also a beautiful land, whose vegetation fascinates the spirit, captivates the consciousness with its grandeur and severity. In the taiga there is nothing to do for sissies and people who are weak in spirit and body. Indeed, hunting in these forests is sometimes associated with the principles of survival. Therefore, an easy careless walk from these places should not be expected!

I really liked the Yakut knife, convenient and beautiful. Recently I watched a video about Yakut knives and was stunned how a Yakut cuts frozen fish into planer, and translucent sliced planer cuts a knife so perfectly, I got it out of the freezer at home and somehow didn’t cut it, and I waited for it to thaw. What surprised me is the strength of the Yakut knife, how did the ancient masters not knowing the brand of steel make such strong knives ?? Of course, I won’t get such a strong knife, but something similar at least outwardly.

And so I have a blank from a cultivator knife. And so I proceed to make the knife.

We will need a tool
  1. Bulgarian
  2. Drill
  3. Horn
  4. Sandpaper
  5. Knife blank
  6. Wood for hilt

Here is the knife blank I already released it, and forged a little. Heated well, metal effortlessly forged well.

I make a breakdown in the middle of the ball from the bearing, somewhere 60 mm in diameter, I looked at many options, I liked this more. The easiest. Many breakdowns are made deep, I do not risk yet. Somehow I’ll try to break through the cone hammer with a pin so that the longitudinal lines are, rather than round, well, then it’s like something later.

I heat and forge a blade, forming an oval shape of a knife on the opposite side ...

And once again I shake the breakdown with a ball, you need to heat it well ..

Well, that’s it, forging is complete.

Now I cut off all the excess with a grinder, form a shank, the main thing is to cool more often, otherwise the metal will overheat and become soft. I grind the entire surface of the knife into a rough one, without especially changing the grain of paper

Well, now I proceed to hardening and tempering of metal

Quenching
I heat the knife until it stops magnetizing, wait another minute, and then dip in heated oil. After hardening I release the knife for an hour and a half at 200 ° C

Here is a view of the knife after hardening. Glass is scratching.

Now I proceed to grinding the knife, changing the grain on the grinder to barely noticeable scratches on the metal.

I process fine emery sandpaper 2000ka like.

And even smaller, the smallest that I have.

Front side

I polish goya paste on valencircle

That's it. Having wound the knife with a rag and adhesive tape, so as not to scratch, I proceed to the handle. For the handle I take a ready-made bar of suvel of birch, already dried. Here is an old photo of how I mined it

Having drilled a hole in the center of the bar, and having poured the epoxy, I press in the knife, hammer the chips into the cracks.

I grind the handle to the desired shape, and polish it to a shiny valencircle. Defective place, in the form of a knot, fill it with epoxy.

That's it. Thank you for your attention, do not judge strictly. I did my best. Until new homemade friends.
