Many of you often deal with wood processing. Finishing the surfaces of the product is extremely important, because its appearance and resistance to external influences depend on the quality of the coating.
In this article, the author of the YouTube channel “I Build It - DIY Tips and Tricks” will tell you how to make your own finish mixture for coating wooden products.

In this project, the “experimental” product will be a homemade maple stool. There is one problem in it: the tree from which it is made was initially poorly dried and contained a certain amount of moisture. As it dried, cracks began to appear on it. And the faster the moisture came out of the wood, the more actively it began to become covered with cracks. The author decides to try to suspend this process by retaining moisture inside the wood.
The first thing he does, he covers the entire product with a thick layer of linseed oil. This is a pretty good finish on its own. The problem is that it forms a not very resistant film, which would for a long time be able to impede the movement of moisture, both inside and outside the wood. And the main task of the master is precisely - not to allow moisture to evaporate too quickly from the tree. John also does not want to cover the stool with a too thick protective layer, because in this case the tree will resemble plastic.
Therefore, he will try to cook Danish oil according to his recipe. In the factory version, it is a mixture of ordinary polyurethane, boiled linseed oil and white spirit in approximately equal proportions.
So, the author is faced with containers with the above ingredients. He casts some of the linseed oil and slightly dilutes it with a small amount of white spirit, as it has already begun to thicken. Now he adds to the same container the remaining listed substances - liquid polyurethane and white spirit in approximately equal proportions. It is advisable to store such a mixture in a glass container with a screwed iron lid. Metal and glass (unlike plastic containers) are a reliable obstacle to the penetration of air, which, when reacted with these substances, causes them to quickly harden.
Then the glass jar is covered with a sealed film, tightly twisted with an iron lid, and shaken properly. The mixture is ready!
Now the author passes this mixture along the inside of the stool, working with a regular brush. And leaves to dry for several minutes, so that during this time the liquid has time to absorb.
It is more like fine polishing. It is applied in several stages, in layers. Each layer dries up for 10-12 hours, is rubbed with 400 grit sandpaper, and covered with the next layer. Then the product dries again 10-12 hours and is again covered with the next layer, wiped and so on. Thus, from 6 to 8 layers are superimposed, and more can be done until the desired result is achieved. You can achieve the effect that the product will be completely mirrored, and at the same time the coating layer will be very thin.
This can be achieved if you work with the brush very carefully, and at the same time, do not wipe each layer and do not blot.
Thanks to the author for a simple but very important recipe for finishing wood!
