Garden bench lounger

Hello again, dear the inhabitants of our site and sympathizers. I want to bring to your attention my version of the garden bench, which, if desired, can be transformed into a deck chair.

To begin with, the wife asked me to do something like a bench or a bench in the country for a long time, and I had the idea to build a hanging bench such as a swing, hanging it between two apple trees, but since the apple trees are already old and can’t withstand the load, this undertaking had to refuse. But since I wanted to do something unusual, I looked through a bunch of materials on the Internet and decided to combine the solutions I liked most and here’s what I got:

To build a bench, we need:
1. A board of 50 with a width of 200 mm. - 6 m. (4 segments of 1.5 m.)
2. Rail 20x30 mm. - 15 pcs. 2.5 m each
3. Rail 30x50 mm. - 1 m.
4. Board 25x150 mm - 1m.
5. Adhesive PVA "Moment" Joiner.
6. Self-tapping screws galvanized 70 mm.
7. Finishing nails (carriage) 50 mm.
8. “Pinotex” paint or the like.

The tool is mainly used by ordinary carpentry:
1. Electric fret saw (for lack of it is possible to cut out with an ax)
2. Saw - a knife on a tree.
3. The plane.
4. angle grinder ("grinder") with a grinding nozzle.
5. The screwdriver.
6. The hammer.

Before starting to make the bench, I first made some sketches, and then cut out two main parts (the racks of the seat and the back) from the cardboard and a human figure in a scale of 1:10, so that you could move them relative to each other to choose the optimal position.

The picture shows what major dimensions I repelled from, and I determined the dimensions I needed by the pencil "serifs" on the layout.

The marking of the racks of the back and seat was applied directly to the boards

Having previously processed one side with a planer (my boards were not planed). To obtain smooth curved lines, I used a meter steel ruler as a pattern.

Then, along the outlined circuit, I sawed one seat upright and backrest, each of which I then used as templates in the manufacture of their “twin brothers”.

Then, having fastened pairs of racks with clamps, he processed them together with a “grinder” with a grinding nozzle. Flaws from machining and sharp edges eliminate "melee."

Since operation is supposed to be in the open air, not only on the grass, the legs of the bench must be protected as much as possible from moisture. Pinotex certainly protects well, but it is better to play it safe and make waterproofing with bituminous mastic.Pre-heating a mastic with a gas burner directly in the bank

And then apply the heated brush to the base of the racks. The width of the brush, I think, will be enough, since the greatest absorption occurs at the end of the wood. For a greater impregnation effect, I literally burn mastic with a burner, by analogy with tarring skis.

The result is these "hooves"

I’m trying to assemble a design to estimate the correctness of calculations, for this I use “technological” rails.

A chair nearby stands to compare the height of the seat.

My next step was wrong, so I highly recommend not repeating it! Fearing that the wood would be saturated with moisture (the weather turned bad, it rained), I hurried to cover the racks with a pinotex, part of which had to be removed during the subsequent gluing of the parts.

Therefore, painting should be done after the final assembly.

To increase the stiffness in the lateral directions (so that the bench does not "fold" to the side), the support arms, especially the rear, were made wider and, in addition to the self-tapping screws, “put” on PVA glue.

When connecting, controlling the installation of parts on the square and comparing the distance between the uprights for parallelism.

After joining, the excess glue must be removed, otherwise after painting all these “bloopers” will be visible, since the pinotex, in addition to tinting, also emphasizes the texture of the tree.

Then he simply sheathed the frame with 20 × 30 mm rails., Lubricating the abutment points with glue and maintaining the interval using the same rail placed on the rib. I used so-called “carriage” nails as fasteners

They subsequently "caught up" with a thicker nail (150)

He filled the recesses with matches smeared with glue. As a result, we got two details of which the bench will consist.

After painting and assembly, the bench looks like this:

The legs can be slightly extended and the head folded back. My wife is already thinking about how to sew headrest pillows. And the fact that the bench can be transformed into a deck chair can be judged by the following photos:

It looks like a fully assembled bench, and so

It is spread out in a chaise lounge on which it is possible to relax or sunbathe reclining. It will not be possible to tilt the back more hollow, firstly, the “fifth point” can fall into the formed gap, and secondly, the structure can go out of balance and tip over due to the displacement of the center of gravity beyond the support area.

The bench is already “run-in”, the two of us (and this is about 200 kg.) Can withstand. If someone thinks the slats are thin, then let them remember the parable of the broom, which is more difficult to break connected than each twig separately. Due to the “independent suspension” of the seat and back (they are not fastened together), the irregularities of the platform on which the bench is installed do not matter (naturally within reasonable limits), it is also already “run-in”.

Yes, I forgot to pay attention to fastening the support bars. Since they bear the entire main load “shear”, for their fastening it is necessary to use galvanized self-tapping screws, black hardened “shear” loads do not hold.

I wanted to make the armrests out of the remaining 50 waste, since the profile of the scraps repeats the profile of the seat, but my wife dissuaded me, arguing that it would be close to them. In the future, perhaps I will make a canopy over the bench.

That's all for me, I hope you enjoyed the article, until we meet again.
