S-Video Distribution Amplifier

The author, under the nickname Dan Chelger, needed to connect two televisions to one video source with an S-Video output (in this case, a video director's console). In order to avoid loss of quality, he manufactured the proposed distribution amplifier.

The S-Video interface separately transmits luminance and synchronization signals on one line, and color signals on the other, which improves image quality. Also, by disconnecting and connecting the second line, you can quickly switch between monochrome and color modes. If the signal source has only an S-Video output, and the TV has only a composite input, the signals are mixed using a capacitor, while the advantages of separate transmission are lost. But this is not the case, the master both TVs have S-Video inputs, and the distribution amplifier had to be made dual-channel. The master decided to execute homemade on the LM359 chip - a high-speed dual operational amplifier, taking the connection circuit from the datasheet and choosing capacitors and resistors according to the required frequency range. 75-ohm resistors at the inputs and outputs are used to match the input and output resistances.

Next, he draws up an arrangement of the components on a perfboard-type breadboard and their interconnections. The double op-amp master is located in the middle, the channel strands are on the sides of it, mirror-relative to each other:

Having decided on the schematic and wiring diagrams, he assembles the amplifier, at the same time placing both the input connector and both outputs on the same board. Two wires going out are designed to supply power.

Remembering the rule about "not in principle, but in the case", the master places the board in the case, on the side wall of which there is a socket for power supply, and in the top cover makes holes for access to the connectors located on the board.

The distribution amplifier is ready. It will also be useful to owners of DVD players, some old laptops, game consoles and other devices with S-Video output. S-Video Connector Pinout:
