ICE coffee table

The coffee table from ICE was already made by Instructables by nickname Mr_o_uk, and there is a translation of the corresponding article. Well, the author of Instructables under the nickname doily_grunge decided to make himself the same table. Here's what happened:

The master warns against reworking efficient and rare engines; I’ll add from myself that engines that have at least once worked on leaded gasoline are not suitable. An engine of the Celeveland 351 type (where 351 is the volume in cubic inches, this is as much as 5.8 liters) went to the master for free, that is, for nothing. Using well-known techniques for loosening rusty bolts and nuts, he disassembles the engine. It is necessary to keep all the small details that are planned to be left on the finished coffee table.

Few people will agree to put a dirty engine in their room, so the master first cleans it using a degreaser, a wire brush and a hose. Attention must be paid to where all dirt washed out of the engine will get into. And now the engine is clean, but still rusty. To fix this, the master takes on a sandblasting device, if it is not there, a steel wire brush clamped into a drill will do. Rust must be removed from everywhere. Cleaning process:

After waiting for complete drying after cleaning, the master first applies the anti-aging, and then the secondary primer. A few thin layers are better than one thick one. Nothing more reminds of the fact that here once there was dirt, rust:

Having cleaned and removed parts from the engine, the master sets them back, after which he paints the engine. The brass nut in which the temperature sensor was located is even polished. Pistons do not need to be returned to their places - they will be required for another.

To clean the pistons, the master needed: aluminum foil (does not leave scratches), a brake cleaner and long monotonous work. But the result! Compare the uncleaned piston with the cleaned one:

The master installs pistons with connecting rods in places not intended for them - this is how it should be:

The master considered it sufficient to fix each of the connecting rods with just one 4.5-inch bolt. But you can drill additional holes and cut the threads in them, then it will be possible to fix each connecting rod with two bolts.

Finally, the master winds the glass from the old coffee table and places it on the pistons, separating them with soft gaskets that prevent slipping. But it’s safer to use plexiglass, which, although it is cloudy, but does not break. Since it is light, it will have to be glued. And the legs that separate the engine from the floor become the door stops. The following is the finished result:

So the mighty engine, in which fire literally once raged, received a second life as an object of furniture. Not so honorable, of course, but much better than rusting in a landfill.
