It would seem that metal and the concept of "chair" are incompatible things. The author of this workshop will make you doubt it. He made a simple and comfortable chair made of sheet metal and a tube, to which is attached a removable cover with magnets. Agree that the idea is fresh.
Parts of the chair are connected by welding. In addition, the author offers an original idea to give a sheet metal armchair a technocratic broken shape.
If you have a welding machine and you have long dreamed of trying your hand at creating a modern of furniture - This project is exactly what you need. In order to make a metal chair in the loft style you will need:
Materials:
- sheet metal along the length of the chair + allowance for bends;
- a metal rod of square section up to 15 mm thick;
- genuine leather or high quality leatherette for the manufacture of a removable cover;
- rectangular neodymium magnets 1-2 mm thick;
- a woolen fabric that holds the mold well for making pillows and a filler in the form of foam rubber or synthetic winterizer;
- glue for magnets;
- primer for metal.
Instruments:
- Bulgarian, cutting wheel for metal, grinding wheel;
- welding machine;
- clamps;
- sewing machine;
- scissors for cutting leather;
- a wooden pallet and bars to give the chair the necessary shape;
- construction tape, square, ruler;
- chalk or white marker.
Step One: Fit Your Seat
The author offers an original way that will help give the necessary shape to a sheet of metal. For this you need a sheet of optimal thickness.
Mark the lines along which the sheet needs to be bent. Make continuous cuts along the lines without cutting through the metal. The notches should be located on the side where the angle will be obtuse. The idea is to "open" the metal and get the necessary bend.
In order that the bend does not give a curvature, the author uses an impromptu machine made in haste from a wooden pallet and bars. The wooden lever allows you to bend the metal without much effort.
Step Two: Create a Stable Frame
Instead of legs, the author conceived the basis of the original geometric shape of a square metal rod. The pieces are cut at an angle and fit flush with the plane of the seat.
Mark the frame parts one at a time, as you weld.
Start from the back. This is where the “leg” of the chair is located, which raises the back to a comfortable height for operation.
To fix the frame, spot welding will be enough. Grind the corners where the frame parts fit together. Weld points can also be ground if desired.
Step three: make a removable leather case
The author proposed the original idea of fixing a removable cover on neodymium magnets. Magnets are attached to the cover with glue along the edge of the stock.
To begin, wash the chair and wipe dry. If you use steel that is susceptible to corrosion, treat it with a special primer (primer) to prevent rust formation.
In order to cut a piece of skin of the required shape, lay the skin or leatherette on a seat and carefully straighten. Fix the skin with the clips on the back as shown in the photo.
Fix magnets on the front side along the edge, temporarily fixing the skin in the desired position. Cut excess, leaving an allowance for bending along the width of the magnets.
In order for the skin to fit on the bends, as it should, it must be cut to the depth of the allowance. Wrap the skin on the back of the seat, fixing it with magnets, but this time on the back of the seat. Put the magnet on the glue and let it dry completely.
Step Four: Sew a Pillow
A pillow made of wool will serve as a headrest. It is also removable and adjustable in height thanks to magnetic straps.
Determine the size of the head restraint and cut two pieces of wool with seam allowance. Sew on the sewing machine or manually the three sides of the pillow, folding the parts inside out. In the resulting pocket of the pillow, place the filler: foam rubber or synthetic winterizer. Sew on the 4th side.
Sew two leather straps to the pillow. On each of them fix on a magnet. Try on your wool headrest.
The chair in the loft style of metal and genuine leather is ready! You can be sure that not one of your friends has such a chair.
