Hello everybody!!! I had free time for a couple of hours - I decided to make a knife. I chose a small bearing from a pile of metal, I will forge a knife from it.
Need a tool
- Drill
- Bulgarian
- Grinding machine
- File
- Metal for knife
- Horn
- Wood for hilt
.
Before forging, I burn in the furnace, heat to a cherry color and leave to cool in the sand. After firing, it will be easier to forge the metal after firing, it has lost hardening and has become soft. Grinder do cut the bearing across. I heat the bearing and straighten it on the anvil. Once again I heat it and forge the approximate shape of the knife.
After forging the shank, I trim again
That's it.
Quenching and vacation. After forging the knife, I cut off all the excess, grind a little and proceed to hardening. I heat it before it ceases to magnetize and dip into heated oil and that's it. After hardening, the knife became brittle; to give it a strength, tempering of metal is required. I leave the vacation in the oven for 2 hours at 200 ° C and let it cool with the oven, after which I grind a little.
I form a wedge and grind the surface from coarse to fine sandpaper.
On a shank I weld a piece of a bolt with a thread for mounting the handle.
I found a maple cap for the handle, but its length was not enough for me, I had to make a birch cap from a piece. I drill a hole in the workpiece, and after lubricating everything with glue, I hammer a block on the shank. Between the tree I lay a copper plate. I grind the approximate form.
I go through all the sandpaper.
Now, after grinding, I cook the handle in natural wax for two hours.
Well, that’s it, the knife is ready! Thank you all for your attention and to new Homemade friends.
