Easy way to age (stain) wood

Hello dear readers andthe inhabitants of our site!
Many of you often work with wood, and apply various technologies and techniques for treating its surface. Most often, this is a set of various impregnations, stains, varnishes, and other topcoats.

In this article, the author of the workshop Workshop Romance YouTube channel, will tell you about one very interesting technique that will give the surface of the wood an aged, or stained, appearance.

This method is very simple, and can be applied already on existing structures, or of furniture.

Materials
—  Steel wool
- Table 9% vinegar
- Boards from pine, oak, birch
—  Linseed oil
- Matte and glossy varnish
- Stain
- Sandpaper
- Glass jar with a lid.

Instruments, used by the author.
- A brush.

Manufacturing process.
The basic material that will be required for this process is called differently. In English they designate it with steel wool, and Russians prefer to call it steel wool.

The main characteristic of this material is the thickness of the threads, it can vary from the thinnest to very large. Each gradation has different applications.
Easy way to age (stain) wood

So, the author acquired the thinnest steel wool, and filled her a small glass jar. After this, the jar is filled with 9% vinegar, and left for 12 hours or more.

At this time, the reaction of acetic acid with iron proceeds, and iron (II) acetate is obtained. Hydrogen is released during this reaction, be careful!

After the set time, the author opened the can, and indeed, between the fibers he found a large number of bubbles. The solution itself looks like water, and has no color.

The master prepared as many as four boards to demonstrate this type of processing, and various finishes. Further, all types of wood - from bottom to top in the picture.

The first is a birch plank.

Then two pine boards, with the only difference being that one of them is brushed.

And the last, most interesting test subject is oak. It exhibits the effect of acetate almost immediately.

The master applies a layer of the prepared solution to the strip on the left in the picture, and a simple linseed oil on the right.

This is how oak wood, just covered with a layer of oil, plays.

During the time that the author applied the oil, the oak board has already darkened a lot, and has acquired a slightly purple hue. You can see how much the color has changed in comparison with the original.
The author leaves all the boards for a day to dry completely, and complete the reactions.

After a day, all varieties of the tree became very dark.

The oak has become so interesting in color that it even looks like ebony wood.

The rest of the boards also acquired a purple hue, and are more like rosewood.
Next, the author cleans the surface with sandpaper.

Without a topcoat, the surface really looks old and has a dull appearance.

The most interesting is the brushed pine board.

Now the author wants to show various finishes. The first is a matte varnish, and after it the purple hue disappears, and the wood becomes like a nut.

The bright area, as you remember, is covered only with linseed oil, and to the left of it the master applied a small strip of stain.

Another strip is also made in the center of the “aged” surface, it is covered with glossy varnish.
The author most of all likes the effect that oak wood gives, it is really beautiful, and it can rightly be called stained!

And finally, a small trick, and a warning. Steel wool is very flammable, it does not burn with an open flame, but it starts to smolder even from a small spark. When working with a grinder - remove this material away, preferably in a steel barrel.

I thank the author for a simple but very interesting technique of aging wood!

Have you tried this way?
All good mood, good luck, and interesting ideas!
