DIY telescopic pocket knife

I welcome all fans to craft, I propose to consider instructions for making a small telescopic knife do it yourself. The author used to make some parts from his old motorcycle. Such a knife can be carried with you in your pocket, it takes up little space, folds well, and in a “fighting” state the blade holds rather tightly. The author did not use sophisticated equipment for making a knife, but he still has to work with files. If you are interested in the project, I propose to study it in more detail!

Materials and tools used by the author:

Material List:
- screw;
- the axis of the motorcycle (or other material);
- a piece of sheet steel for the blade;
- brass rod.

Tool List:
- drilling machine;
- grinder;
- vise;
- gas-burner;
- oil for hardening;
- a hacksaw for metal;
- belt grinding machine;
- drill;
- files for metal;
- tape cutting machine.

Manufacturing process homemade:

Step one. Case preparation
We proceed to the manufacture of the knife body, which will be its handle. The author used the axle from his old motorcycle, which was expensive for him. We cut the axis to the desired size, clamp it in a vice and then drill a hole along the drill on the drill machine to make a tube.

The diameter of the hole should be such that a screw can enter inside, more precisely a stud.

Further along the part, you need to cut a slotted hole, for this the author drilled a series of holes, and then combined them with a drill. The author also modified the irregularities with a drill using a thick grindstone. Of course, I had to work with a flat file.

At the end, the part was well sanded with a drill and belt sander.

Step Two Clamp
Inside the case there is a piece of a hairpin, in it the author drilled a hole and cut a thread. To this piece of the stud, the knife blade will then be attached. To fix the blade, a screw will be screwed into the stud.The author made the screw himself; the finger grip was made from the head of the same screw. So that the thread does not rust, and everything looks more interesting, a threaded rod can be used in brass or copper.

Step Three Blade making
We cut a strip of metal from the saw blade or use another carbon steel that can be hardened.
We need to attach a strip of metal to the part that moves inside the case. The author made a cut in the hairpin under the blade, drilled holes and fixed the knife on brass pins, slightly forging everything by heating with a gas burner.

At the end, the blade was shortened to the required length, the author brought out the bevels using a file. Of course, if the steel is initially hardened, then it will be possible to work with it exclusively with an electric tool.

Step Four Hardening and assembly
At the end, the author tempered the blade in oil, it is also advisable to let it go so that the steel is not brittle. After hardening, we grind the blade with sandpaper to a shine, wash, and you can assemble the knife.

It works perfectly, the blade is securely fixed in both positions. The design drawback is that the steel will rust, so the knife needs to be either lubricated or artificially coated with a patina, as an option, burnishing can be done.

The project is completed on this, I hope you liked the homemade work, and you found useful thoughts. Good luck and creative inspiration, if you decide to repeat this. Do not forget to share your ideas and homemade things with us!

Valery,
Our local factory made them ... Only ours had a bottle opener on the other end of the thread
We also made one local factory, but not a knife, but a corkscrew, below the "jaw" of the opener the hole into which the body - cylinder was inserted, turned out to be a T-shaped corkscrew!
we made such individual dosimeters
I remember remember, DP-22V, still lying somewhere, I have to look! yes
Korolev,
From a young age I remember these. And now there is one. If it catches my eye - I take a picture. Our local factory made them. Handle tube, blind on one side and with internal thread on the other. Blade with an external thread cylinder. Only ours had a bottle opener at the other end of the thread. When the knife is inside - the opener is outside. It was not flat, but "turned from a cylinder", so it didn’t interfere in a pocket.
And in the army we did such individual dosimeters. There the tube itself was used (with a "pocket mount", as on a fountain pen and internal thread.). Then it was half cut along the scraps of a bolt with a suitable thread, the blade was inserted there and (the most difficult!) It was seized by welding ...))). I could not agree at all in the workshop of the park, I just soldered with acid.
I saw in a shop for fishermen. The aluminum cylinder with knurling, the cap is unscrewed - the blade is removed, unfolded, screwed. There was a blade inside, it became outside! good
