Greens on the windowsill - a source of vitamins at any time of the year

Somehow I thought about growing greenery on the windowsill. Onions are certainly good, but I also want other aromatic spice plants. I rummaged in nete and found it!
So I want to share with you, maybe I will help someone else.

If you have long wanted to have such a small garden, then there is nothing easier!
In my article, the advice of expert gardener Neli Murashkina will be used.

According to the expert, the spice plants are unpretentious - they need regular watering and a well-lit place. Let's try to figure out how exactly you can grow such spices as basil, thyme, oregano and rosemary on your own.

5 tips to get you started:
1. Find a sunny spot, preferably near the south or west window. Often, winter light from the north window is not enough for the grass to grow normally.
2. Prepare a pot or several pots. Anyone will do - both the new one, bought at the flower shop, and the old one. Choose the size according to the planned volume of herbs. Remember that the greens will grow and she will need room. Attentive to the selection of colors and sizes of pots, you can approach the issue creatively and make pots from old cups, mugs or cans, just remember to make holes for drainage.
3. Get high quality primer. Lay 2-3 cm of gravel or expanded clay on the bottom of the pots, pour soil on top.
4. Buy herbs from a reputable retailer or brand name. It is advisable that their region of origin be close to yours. When purchasing, check the expiration date.
5. Water the herbs with plenty of water. Watering once a week will provide herbs with the necessary moisture and will not lead to rotting of the roots.

Basil

You can grow basil on the windowsill at any time of the year. For cultivation in enclosed spaces and on the windowsill, the following varieties are suitable: Clove aroma, Marquise. You can start planting both from the seeds of the plant, and from the shoots or seedlings. But better with seeds.
Place a box or a flower pot on the windowsill or take a long flower box, the basil needs a lot of space. Sow the seeds no deeper than a centimeter, otherwise the grass will sprout for a long time. Between the seeds, leave a gap of 7-10 cm. When the plant sprouts and adds five centimeters in growth, it's time to start loosening the soil. This must be done periodically - once every 2-3 days. Loosening enriches the soil with oxygen.

It is necessary to water the basil in the morning once a day!

Thyme (also known as thyme)

The soil for thyme should be light, dry and saturated with limestone. A sandy substrate is suitable. The plant loves light, so the sunny side is the perfect place for thyme.
Thyme should be watered early in the morning and evening. Thyme is a drought tolerant plant, so water should not stand in a pan. When growing thyme in pots, add liquid fertilizer or soluble once a month.

Oregano

We usually call it oregano. He is a relative of marjoram.
It is necessary to sift the seeds in a pot and cover with a film or glass so that the earth does not dry out.
At the initial stage, seedlings develop very slowly. But when they ascend, they should be transplanted into permanent pots. Water once a day and make sure that the water does not stagnate.

Rosemary

Rosemary is a thermophilic plant. Loves water and sunlight. Give preference to a classic clay pot. Try to avoid plastic. The size of the container should be sufficient so that it can accommodate the root system of a small bush 30-50 cm in size. Sow rosemary seeds on the surface of the earth. Pull the plastic wrap over the pot. Make a small hole in it for air circulation.
Make sure that home-grown rosemary gets the right amount of sun. Without sunlight, your plant will grow slowly, its stems will become thinned and brittle, and the leaves will soon begin to fall. Cut the first shoots of rosemary when the plant reaches 10-15 cm, and the branches begin to slightly stiffen.

And one more trick from an expert gardener - on our home beautiful lavender can calmly grow window sills!

It is widely used in cooking for preparing various salads, sauces, soups and main dishes. Using lavender is very similar to using pepper. Vinegar acquires a very pleasant aroma, during the infusion of which the flowers of this plant were used.

So what lavender needs:
• lavender is very fond of the sun and is sensitive to drafts;
• for starters, you can take a pot with a diameter of 30 cm and a volume of 1.5 to 2 liters;
• lavender pots or containers should be able to drain very well;
• the soil should be alkaline (almost a mixture of peat and sand), crushed eggshells can be added. If the seeds still did not germinate, you can try to remove the pot for 2 weeks in the refrigerator;
• young plants should be watered in the evenings or in the early morning. Take water for irrigation, standing, room temperature. It is necessary to water not only the soil, but also the green parts of the plant;
• the first two months after sowing, once a week you need to feed lavender (2 g of liquid fertilizer per liter of water);
• if the room is very dry, clean cold water should be sprayed near the plants;
• make sure that the plant receives enough light and at least a little heat;
• winter lavender must be cool, therefore, if lavender lives on the windowsill, you should cover the batteries.
