Step # 1: The engine is not for driving
The V-shaped motor for the table does not have to be in good condition. More precisely, it is better even if it is faulty. Firstly, the purchase of such an engine will cost you less, and secondly, there is no need to take a serviceable unit, which can still serve any car enthusiastto "spoil" it anyway.
If you have in the garage just the right engine was lying around - great. If it is not available, but the idea has captured you and does not give rest, then the engine needs to be purchased. This can be done in auto repair shops for car dismantling, or you can search for a suitable part at online auctions, where you can buy it for a mere penny.
Step number 2: get rid of excess
The complexity of the next step depends on what configuration you got the engine. You can remove all unnecessary by checking the manual for the engine, or you can act at random by simply unscrewing everything that you do not need.
As a result, the engine block, 4 pistons (as many as possible), connecting rods, sprocket and the chain itself should remain. Moreover, the pistons and connecting rods may not be from this particular engine, the main thing is to be in a suitable condition. Everything else can be removed and even try to sell. If you decide to leave the piston rings - they look good, keep in mind that washing and cleaning them to perfect condition will be quite problematic.
Step # 3: Spring Cleaning
Cleaning from oil and rust is a rather laborious process. If there is someone who will execute it for you - congratulations.If not, then stock up on tools and patience.
Initially, dirt and rust can be removed with sandpaper and a metal brush. But the block needs to be cleaned from the inside, and this is easier said than done. Hardware stores sell products that guarantee the removal of the worst fat, soot, and oils - you can use them, but don't forget about safety precautions. Gloves and a respirator will in no way be superfluous: such products are quite toxic. After cleaning, rinse the parts with warm water and dry with a compressor to avoid further corrosion.
Step # 4: Protection for the metal
If the engine block is made of aluminum, then rust is not afraid of him. It is better to protect the steel engine with a layer of soil, and then paint it. However, you can paint for aesthetic reasons.
Step # 5: Installing the Pistons
Screw the upper connecting rod bolts into the holes from the cylinder head mounting. It is possible that the thread matches and does not give you unnecessary trouble. The lower mounting of the connecting rods must be aligned to the level and secured. Best of all - by welding.
Step # 6: Decoration
For decorative purposes, fasten a small sprocket on the front side of the structure (using a bolt of the desired diameter) and hang a chain on it.
Step # 7: Glass Craftsman
It's time to cover the structure with a glass top. Decide on the size of the glass and order it in the workshop. Or make it yourself. Its corners can be beveled or rounded, but it is advisable, for security reasons, not to leave too large hanging “wings”.
