Homemade motorcycle wheels

In this article I will describe the process of creating motorcycle wheels under a hydraulic brake system.

History of creation

It all started when I once realized that the braking system of my motorcycle is far from perfect, no matter how hard I tried to at least somehow fine-tune it, I did not achieve any major changes for the better. And then one day I was tired of all this, and I decided to put hydraulics on the Motz. But stock wheels, no matter how you turn it, are not suitable for installing brake discs, and with foreign cars also spoked are expensive, so I decided to do it myself. The rim decided to leave relatives, and grind the hubs.

Blueprints

Internet break a bunch of information, found several drawings, based on them made a drawing of the front hub, for this I used the Splan7 program, it is quite simple and convenient. Here is a drawing of the front hub:

But complications arose with the rear hub, since it differs from the front by the presence of a spline part, which is also hot, and it was not possible to make it on the product. After some thought and discussion with other “customizers”, it was decided to take the turned part of the Ural chamomile as a basis and press it inside the hub. To do this, the front drawings are slightly redone.

Here is the native splined part before and after turning:

Here is the assembled rear hub:

Turning works

The moment of truth came and I took the drawings to a turner. A week has passed and the finished parts are already at my place. I’ll tell you, the feeling when a part goes from a project drawn by you to a full-fledged metal blank is unforgettable!

Drilling holes
It's time to drill holes for the spokes and for the brake discs. This is where I ran into the first problem. After processing the parts on a lathe, the top layer of metal was hardened in places and expensive good drills hardly gnawed at its surface. Unfortunately the drilling machine in the garage not had to drill with a drill. I drilled with drills of different diameters, under the spokes 3mm., 6mm., Under the wheels 4mm., 6.5mm., And then cut the thread for the eighth bolts. As a result of the whole affair, two drills and one drill took to drill 92 holes, the earth rest in peace (

Here is such a device for attaching the workpiece

The holes were marked (in addition to radial risks) with a paper printout of the drawing in a 1: 1 scale with PVA glue glued to the hub.

Preparation for painting

I wanted to chrome at the beginning, after I found out the price (26 rubles per square centimeter) I decided to stop with powder paint.
The hubs are degreased, cleaned, the threads are closed. You can carry)

We carry an ear for painting:

In general, I was not very pleased with the level of painting, since the strength of the coating did not meet my expectations. But the deed has been done, which is already ... But the color and structure are excellent.

Wheel assembly

I did not want to sculpt a special device for assembling the wheel, so I limited myself to the wheel axis clamped in a vice. To eliminate the "eggs" and "eights" I used two statically attached laser pointers. Knitting needles took Ural, long.

Here's what happened after the build:

That's compared to what it was

Rear wheel with a bridge:

Subsequently, it remains to make and weld the mounts under the caliper, assemble the brake system to a heap. Here's how it all looks on a motorcycle:

In conclusion, I would like to say that this project completely paid off, it turned out to win both in appearance and in quality of the brake system. The wheels are already tested and ride) Good luck to everyone and creative inspiration;)
