Installation for pumping the ball with hydrogen

Ballooning is great fun. Fortunately, portable helium cylinders have now appeared in online stores. One such balloon is enough to inflate 5-6 balls. But if helium is not available, then it can be replaced with hydrogen. The easiest way to get hydrogen is the reaction of aluminum, copper sulfate and sodium chloride in water (Al + CuSO4 + NaCl + H2O). This is a rather complex reaction as a result of which the aluminum oxide film is destroyed and it begins to interact with water. In this case, hydrogen is released. To carry out this reaction, you can assemble a simple installation.

Here is a short list of things to build the installation: bottle, syringe, hose, cork, copper wire, ball, sealant, copper sulfate, edible salt, aluminum wire. If you replace the aluminum wire with aluminum foil (a lump is made), the reaction will go much faster. Aluminum from the can is also suitable, it will only be necessary to remove the paint and the polymer protective layer from the inside with the skin.

In principle, you can not bother with this whole structure and pull the ball directly on the neck of the bottle. But if the reaction goes too violently, then it will not be stopped. Heating may be such that the water boils. So goggles and gloves will not be superfluous.

So, let's proceed to the manufacture of our installation:

In the lid we drill two holes. One under the hose, the other under the syringe. In a hole under the syringe and on the syringe itself, it is not bad to cut the thread. It will be better to stay.

After installing the syringe and hose, grease the joints with sealant.

Cooking aluminum wire. I repeat that it is better to take aluminum foil right away. With wire, the reaction lasts longer.

A plug is put on the other side of the tube. A ball will be attached to it. A copper wire is inserted into the syringe. The wire attachment point is coated with sealant. On the other hand, aluminum is worn on the wire.

The entire reactor design is ready.

Copper sulfate and edible salt are poured into the bottle in a ratio of 1: 1. Then we pour water and wait for complete dissolution.

We put a bottle for cooling in a basin with cold water. Immerse aluminum in the solution.

Immediately hydrogen begins to stand out. As the aluminum oxide film dissolves and the solution heats up, the reaction accelerates.

If the reaction becomes too violent, then aluminum can always be pulled out of the solution by the syringe.

By the way, the same setup can be used to produce acetylene. To do this, simple water is poured, and instead of aluminum, calcium carbide is taken. The only thing for calcium carbide is to make something like a tea bag.

After some time, the balloon will inflate.

With such a ball, you can come up with a whole bunch of entertainment.
You can stick it in white bags and at night it will look like a ghost.
You can cling to black packets and there will be a dementor.
You can attach the LED and start it at night - you get a UFO.
And if you attach it to a long stick and put it in a fire - it will be fun. Just before you do this, you need to remember what happened to the Hindenburg.

It is better not to bring the lighter to the ball.
