Mowing underwater vegetation, how to make a scythe

Every year more and more fishermen appear on the water bodies, which significantly reduces the number of places for successful fishing. Sometimes, when you go fishing, you see that there’s simply nowhere to catch and you need to create anew fishing place for yourself. The most common problem that arises when arranging a new fishing place is algae. If the snag can also be pulled out somehow, then in the fight against algae, special device - underwater scythe.

Like this homemade and decided to share with other fishermen one author. Such a scythe allows you to cut algae under water almost under the root, and the remaining stumps do not interfere with fishing or fishing.

Materials and tools for making braids:
- a steel strip of metal 2-3 mm thick, 400-500 mm long, 30-40 mm wide. The author used for this purpose a hacksaw blade from a metal saw. The canvas has excellent dimensions for these purposes, and thanks to the strong red-hot steel, even small branches can be cut under water.
- a piece of steel pipe (diameter 15-20 mm, length 400-500 mm);
- grinder;
- drill with drills;
- rope (kapron twine of the order of 10 m);
- a piece of plastic sewer pipe with a diameter of 50 mm;
- a hacksaw;
- a bolt with a nut.

The process of making braids:

Step one. Making a scythe knife

To make a knife, that is, what the vegetation will directly be cut off, you need a grinder or grinder. One of the sides of the steel strip needs to be sharpened well, in the end it should be sharp like a razor, that is, like a real braid. If the braid is dull, it will leave thin algae, just pressing them to the bottom.

Step Two We make the second element of the braid
The second element of the braid is the holder that holds the knife. To make it, you need a piece of steel pipe. Next, a grinder is taken and with the help of it a groove is cut in the pipe, it must be made as shown in the photo. On the knife, you also need to cut a groove that will go into the pipe. As a result, the knife will be mounted on the handle with just one bolt and sit securely on it.

At the same step, you will need to drill a hole in the pipe and knife. Then the knife is inserted into the pipe and tightened with a bolt and nut.

Step Three Place for attaching the rope
To fix the rope, you need to again work with a drill, drilling a hole from the other end of the pipe. After assembling the structure, a rope can be tied to the braid.A strong kapron twine, whose length is 10 meters, acts as a rope. In the photo you can see the scythe, which is already ready for use.

Step Four Making a braid cover
Since the blade of the scythe will be very sharp, any inadvertent touching it can cause serious injury. In addition, a sharp knife can cut things with which the braid will lie in the trunk. To prevent this, a cover is made to the braid. For its manufacture, you will need a piece of plastic pipe with a diameter of 50 cm. As for the length of the pipe, it should be slightly larger than the length of the braid knife.

First of all, using a drill in the center of the plastic pipe, you need to drill a hole, in diameter it should be such that it can easily be inserted into the metal pipe of the braid. Next, a hacksaw is taken and with the help of it along the plastic pipe a cut is made, as indicated in the photo. That's all, the cover is ready, now you can put it on the braid and not be afraid that its sharp knife will lead to some undesirable consequences. Such a braid can be worn even in a backpack.

If you take such a device with you for fishing, then for sure the fisherman will be able to fish wherever he wants.

Step Five How to work with a scythe

When working with such a scythe, you need to know a few rules. First of all, you need to know that you can’t throw a braid into the water with twisted twine, in the hope that it will unwind in flight. At the same time, the braid will spin up very much, twine itself around itself, and when its fisherman drags along the bottom, it can simply cut the rope. As a result, this dangerous tool will remain at the bottom, and will constitute a serious danger to swimmers. As a result, you have to climb into the water and look for a scythe at the bottom.

To properly cast a braid, you must first unwind all the twine and carefully fold it with a ring on the shore. The other end of the rope must be well tied to a bush, a tree, or a peg should be hammered into the ground so that the braid does not fly away with the rope. Throw the braid you need, holding on to the rope. First you need to swing it a bit and then slowly release the rope, there should not be any sudden movements, since the braid can twist.

In total, the author recommends using two methods of mowing grass with such a device. In the first case, the scythe is thrown into the water and it completely sinks to the bottom. Then you can take the rope and gently drag the scythe to the shore. In this case, part of the plants will be cut off, and part wound on a scythe and delivered to the shore. With this approach, it is possible that the bottom will not be slanted algae.

The second method involves the use of jerky movements. The braid also sinks to the bottom, then the rope sinks to ground level and a jerk of about 20-25 cm in length is made, this allows you to reliably mow underwater vegetation almost under the root.

When using such a braid, the twine must be strong, at least it must withstand a load of 50 kg. As for the noise, yes, such an instrument initially scares the fish, but after a while, due to the sludge rising from the bottom and various microorganisms along with it, the fish returns to this area with even greater interest.
