Surely many have already seen homemade water purification filters made from plastic bottles. Such filters really work well if you need to quickly clean some water in extreme conditions. But they have one significant problem - they are either impossible or very difficult to clean, and over time, the filter element becomes clogged and needs to be replaced.
One author proposed an option on how to solve this problem. The filter was assembled from several cans, each of which serves as a separate cartridge. The design turned out to be collapsible, this allows you to change filter elements without any problems.
So, let’s take a closer look at how to assemble such a filter.
Materials and tools for homemade:
- three cans;
- "opener" for a can;
- punch or drill;
- sand;
- hammer;
- gauze fabric, a mesh with a small mesh, well, or a clean sock;
- small smooth stone (pebble);
- adhesive tape;
- charcoal.
Filter manufacturing process:
Step one. We prepare cans
First you need to prepare cans, for this canned food needs to be opened and eaten, well, or feed them to other family members. After this, empty jars will need to be thoroughly washed with detergent.
Step Two Make holes
In the bottom of two cans you need to make a large hole. First you need to draw it. But how to cut, this is a matter of technology. The author drills a series of small holes in a circle of a large hole, as a result, the desired diameter is cut out. In this case, the bank will have barbs, they will need to be bent with a hammer. As a result, in two banks it will be necessary to make these two holes, as can be seen in the photo.
Step Three Set the mesh
Any mesh is suitable, it can be a metal mesh with a small mesh, gauze or, in extreme cases, a clean sock. From the network you need to cut a circle for the diameter of the hole in the bottom of the can. Needlessly made circles should be slightly larger than the diameter of the hole. Water will pass through this mesh, and it will also hold the filter element in the bank. The net is installed inside the can, it must be installed in both cans.
Step Four Fill cans with filter elements
Filtration will consist of three stages, from a larger cleaning method to the smallest one. In the first jar you need to impose a small pebble. The second bank should contain sand.Well, for the finest cleaning, charcoal is used, it must be poured into the last tin can. When filling the cans, it is necessary to ensure that a distance of about 6-12 cm remains to the edges. As a result, when connected, the cans will sit firmly, thereby forming a single system.
Step Five We assemble the filter column
Now all three cartridges need to be interconnected. First you need to take a can of coal, then a can of sand is inserted into it from above. Well, at the very top, in a sand jar you need to insert a jar of pebbles. Paste cans tightly. In conclusion, the seams are fixed with adhesive tape.
Step Six Filter testing
Before using the filter, it must be prepared, namely, cleaned of dust and other dirt that could get into it during assembly. For these purposes, clean water must be passed through the filter about four times. After that, you can already try to use the filter for its intended purpose, namely, to clean it with dirty water. Water should be purified quite well, according to the author, it can even be drunk. Of course, everything here already depends on the type of pollution.
Of course, before use, water will need to be boiled or treated chemically to destroy pathogenic microbes. For these purposes, tablets of chlorine or iodine are suitable.
Of course, other materials can be used as filter elements. For example, coarse-grained sand can be used instead of pebble, it will more finely purify water.
When the filter is clogged, you will need to unwind the tape, put new filter elements in the cans and then reassemble the filter. After that, it will be ready for reuse.
