In this article, we will tell you how to make a hanging shelf rack for storing fishing tackle. The idea is very simple and accessible to anyone who would like to keep their fishing rods in order.
The author of this workshop gave his room to his grandson, and his fishing gear for the time being collected dust in the corners. For a long time he planned to do something like a shelf for them, but without certain skills all projects seemed either complicated or expensive and were put off until better times. Fortunately, he stumbled on the Internet on this idea, which turned out to be ridiculously simple.
The rack consists of four wooden elements and does not require any special tools or machine tools to manufacture. The only tool you need is a jigsaw, and a drill will allow you to complete what you started. However, the author used a hole saw instead of a jigsaw.
To make do it yourself rack for injuring fishing rods, you will need such materials and tools:
1. Materials:
- pine board - 4 segments 40 cm long and at least 2 cm thick;
- glue for wood;
- wood screws;
- putty for wood;
- stain alcohol or oil;
- L-shaped anchors with thread and dowels to them - 4 pairs;
- rubber elements like heat shrink, foam tape or the like;
- U-shaped nails.
2. Tools:
- electric drill;
- Hole saw or jigsaw;
- drills on wood 3 and 6 mm;
- ruler and pencil for marking;
- vise;
- paint roller or paint brush;
- a chisel or knife with a beveled blade for woodcarving;
- sandpaper;
- hammer;
- grinder as necessary.
Step 1: preparing the parts
The author planned to place a rack above the doorway. The height of the wall in that place was no more than 45 cm, so the question of the dimensions of the rack itself was resolved by itself and amounted to 40 cm.
For work, you need boards 40 cm long and about 10-15 cm wide. The thickness in this case is arbitrary, at your discretion, but such that it is convenient to connect the elements of the joint in the joint.
The author used boards 10 cm wide for the manufacture of parts in which recesses for fishing rods are arranged. In total, there are three such recesses-slots, since it is necessary to leave at least 13 cm of space between them to accommodate the handle bar and coils. The diameter of each slot is 5 cm.
Mark the center of each slot on the board and mark as shown in the photo.After that, firmly grip the board in a vise and make round holes with a hole saw.
A hole saw is a type of saw with which you can cut round holes in a workpiece from any material, be it wood, concrete or the like. Usually it is a metal crown (cylinder) with a cutting edge on which there is a diamond spraying (for concrete) or teeth (more often for wood).
A hole saw is not a very common tool, so you can easily replace it with an electric jigsaw or use a nozzle for a drill designed to make round holes in wood sheet materials.
After the holes are made, you need to remove the wood between the edge of the board and the hole. You need to do this at an angle as shown in the photo. But first, markup so as not to spoil the workpiece and that all holes are the same.
The author used a beam saw for this. Such work takes more time, but the small teeth of the bow saw leave a much more accurate cut than ordinary saws.
Sand the board lightly with sanding paper (first coarse, then fine) and set aside for now.
Mark the center axis on wider boards (14 cm each) and draw a line with a pencil. It is necessary to make two holes on it with an electric drill for mounting under 90 degrees of blanks with slots.
Apply glue to the edge of the workpiece and press it against the wide board using the clamps. Fasten the two parts together with screws, using a screwdriver or using a screwdriver.
Step 2: Finish and Paint
The circular saw left a sloppy cut with wood chips, so the author decided to use putty.
Apply a thin layer of putty on the wood in places of bumps, let it dry completely. Sand the treated areas with fine sandpaper.
Try to match the color of the putty to the natural tone of the wood you are using.
Treat the tree with a decorative protective coating. The author used an oil stain. Apply the stain with a roller or a paint brush, wait until the first layer is absorbed into the pores of the tree, and repeat the procedure. Remove excess stain with a paper towel.
An oil stain can also be replaced with decorative tinted oil or natural drying oil if you want to preserve the natural shade of wood.
After the coating has dried, the author added pieces of foam tape inside the slots so that the tree does not scratch the gear.
Step 3: assembly of the structure
The wall on which the rack was planned to be hung is concrete. Therefore, the installation method described below is suitable for any solid materials such as brick, foam concrete, cinder block and the like.
Each rack element is attached to two anchors. To drill holes for anchors, the author used drills with a diameter of 6 mm. Place a dowel inside each hole and screw the anchor into place.
Attach the elements of the rack to the attachment points and press it firmly against the wall so that the grooves-marks in the attachment points remain in the tree.
Take a small chisel or a sharp knife with a beveled blade like those used for woodcarving, and cut small pieces of wood to a depth of 5-10 mm and a length twice that of the protruding part of the anchor.
When finished with the thread, grab the U-shaped nail and hammer it across the groove as shown in the photo.
If the work is done correctly, you can easily hang the rack on the anchors installed in the wall.
