I don’t even know where to start ... Many Lada owners have repeatedly lost their gas tank covers at gas stations. A familiar story, isn't it ... A trifle, but it’s unpleasant to drive with a rag in the gas tank. Several times I even found these covers on the side of the road, though after they got under the wheels.
For the third time, I’m tired of it too. Of course, I understand that many readers will say that the VAZ is not a car, that it’s a bucket of nuts, that ... well, you yourself continue to know.
For my more than 35 years of driving experience, I have traveled by many cars and notice that on military equipment, or on an UAZ, or on the old Moskvich, or on the Volga, the lid on the chain hangs. In Toyota, for example, it is mounted on a special plastic cord, and in most European cars the gas tank cover is simply inserted into a special groove or ledge on the gas tank flap. Even if you forget to close such a lid, at least you won’t lose it.
This is probably because the Zhiguli cover is in any car dealership at the rate of fifty rubles and is made of simple plastic. But most imported cars are not just a plug, there is a special air valve in the lid to equalize the pressure in the tank, and sometimes even a built-in lock. Here they take care of her.
In order to permanently rid yourself of the pleasure of going to the store several times a year for a lid, you will need the following:
1. Actually, the cover itself
2. A pair of thin screwdrivers
3. Small neodymium magnet
4. Glue thermal gun
5. Nippers
6. Pliers
First, remove the o-ring. Slowly, gently prying the plastic around the edges with two screwdrivers, we disassemble the cover.
As a result, we get two halves. In one of the halves inside we see protrusions, and in the other there is a tongue with a spring, which we safely throw out.
After that, we bite off the lower part of the inner half with pliers, about 3-4 millimeters, so that there is free space, where then stick the magnet.
We take a small magnet so that it fits inside the cover, powerful neodymium magnets from old hard drives are perfectly suitable for this purpose. You can find them at any computer service center.
In order not to damage, peel off, and then tear off the magnet from its steel substrate, we simply bend the substrate on both sides with pliers, and inserting a screwdriver into the gap formed, we separate the magnet.
AttentionNeodymium magnets are very powerful, do not pinch your fingers!
In my case, half the magnet was enough.
We thoroughly grease the magnet and both halves of the lid with hot glue, then we combine them and snap them into place. Dress the seal. Lid - stuck ready!
Now, during refueling, you don’t have to think where to put it, so as not to lose it, stick your lid on - stick to any convenient place.
Opened, stuck, seasoned, unfastened, closed.
Finally, I want to admit that this is not my first lid with a magnet, at first I made it easier, I didn’t dismantle the lid, but simply glued the magnet on the outside. A week later, the glue cracked, and the magnet fell off, apparently from the action of gasoline vapors. Therefore, the second time I had to resort to a more reliable method, with disassembly.
