Grass cutting is a very useful tool on the farm. Using it is convenient to prepare animal feed in the village or in the country, using grass or even small branches of trees. It is especially convenient to grind nettles, but this is a very useful herb for livestock. In this article, several options will be considered how to assemble a grass cutter from improvised materials.
The first option that we will consider is a grinder based grass cutter
Materials and tools for homemade:
- Bulgarian (the more powerful, the higher the performance);
- knife for lawn mowers;
- metal tank;
- steel corner to create a frame;
- drill, welding and other tools.
The process of making a grass cutter from a grinder:
First of all, you need to securely fasten the engine, for this the author took metal corners and welded a frame from them. Further, the grinder should be attached as firmly as possible to this frame, since it works at very high speeds and if it comes off, it can cause troubles.
Then, on top of the shaft of the grinder (it is located up), a metal container is installed, grass will be loaded into it and, in fact, the cutting process will take place in it. It is best that the steel of the container is as thick as possible, otherwise, if the knife suddenly turns off during the operation of the grass cutter, it can pierce the steel and fly out.
A steel corner is attached to the bottom of the container, it is needed in order to keep the entire grass mass from rolling inside the container. The corner is fixed with bolts and nuts.
Now you just need to install the knife from the lawn mower on the Bulgarian shaft.
For convenient collection of chopped grass, the author made a special sleeve out of thin metal; it can be sent to a special box for collecting flour from grass or just substitute a bucket. On this assembly grass cutting can be considered complete.

Vacuum cleaner and washing machine cutter
Consider another way to create a grass cutter from improvised materials.
From the materials we need:
- an electric motor from a washing machine;
- the case from the Uralets vacuum cleaner;
- durable sheet metal to create a knife;
- a plastic bucket or other container to create a hopper;
- a plastic bucket to create a grass catcher;
- steel corners;
- electric welding;
- grinder;
- drill;
- screws with nuts and more.
Homemade manufacturing process:
Step one. Case preparation
The author used the case from a vacuum cleaner as a case for a grass grinder. Near the bottom of the hull was made a hole measuring 70X70 cm, through which ground grass is discharged.
Step Two Engine installation
The author put the engine up to the bottom of the casing. As the power unit, the engine from the washing machine was used. As for the knife, it was cut from a durable sheet of metal using a grinder. The author lifted the edges of the knife a bit.
Step Three Receiving bucket and catcher
The author used the receiving bucket from plastic, this is evident because it is light and does not rust.
The catcher was also cut out of a plastic bucket. To prevent grass from scattering, a sack is put on top of it.
Step Four Grass cutter frame
The grass cutter frame is a very important structural element, as it holds all the parts together. The author made a frame from a corner, welding it with welding.
That's all, at this stage the assembly of the grass cutter can be considered complete. Using it, you can easily grind grass and feed animals with useful and nutritious food.
