If you are a blacksmith, you can build yourself such a small forge. It will cost cheaply or even free of charge if there is a brake drum and other parts.
Immediately before starting to study such structures, it should be warned that it is life-threatening to use galvanized objects in places of strong heating, since zinc emits toxic gases. A galvanized part can be cleaned by placing it in vinegar for a couple of days, and then it is perfectly cleaned with sandpaper or other mechanical method.
According to the author, everything is going quickly, it takes about 10 minutes to assemble, but you will have to look for materials. His homemade cost $ 40, but we can find such junk without problems at the scrap metal collection points at times cheaper.
Materials and tools for homemade:
- brake drum (we choose the size ourselves);
- flange for the pipe (diameter depending on the size of the brake drum);
- "T" - a shaped connection;
- nipple;
- bolts and nuts under the flange;
- drainage filter for the shower.
Forging manufacturing process:
Step one. We work with a brake drum
First, a flange and a shower grill are installed on the brake drum. The flange is needed to supply air, and the grill prevents the coals from falling into the pipe. It will be very good if the holes on the flange or grill match. Subsequently, they are pulled together with bolts and nuts. If everything is not as perfect as the author, then you need a drill. Of course, if you need to drill a drum, it will be problematic, since it is made of very durable steel. However, it is not necessary to pass the bolts through the drum if they are tightened well.
Unused openings will remain in the drum, the author did not close them, he considered that additional air supply would go through them.
Step Two Air supply
The author delivers air to the forge with a tee. A tee is used to enable ash and small coals to fall out of the forge. For such purposes, the bottom of the tee does not close. Of course, a long pipe should be used to supply air.A household hairdryer is suitable as a compressor, many other craftsmen have successfully used this approach.
Step Three Trial run
As a fuel, the author decided to temporarily use charcoal, since he had not yet decided on this issue. As an experiment, a compressor can be connected to the system. But for constant work, it is best to find a motor from a 12V car stove and make a supercharger out of it. It is also very desirable to come up with a regulator that could set the desired fan speed.
Regarding the forge support, the author has not yet invented it, so the forge was installed on the sewer manhole. The support can be very easily welded from reinforcement, or made of brick, if there is no welding and materials.
