Homemade opener from an old knife - for beer and other bottles

Probably everyone has any old, worthless table knives on the farm. After prolonged use, their blades have become blacker, become thin, or even break off from time to time. Sometimes it’s a pity the long-lasting cutting tool familiar to the hands. Cutters for woodwork can be made from old knives; their handles can be used for any other tools. But this article will talk about how to make a reliable and convenient beer bottle opener from an old knife.

Stages of manufacturing an opener from a worn out knife:

Stage 1. We need to find an old knife on the farm. Particularly good for our purpose, copies made in the USSR are suitable - with a cast aluminum handle or a handle embedded in plastic.

2 stage. Using a grinder, emery or a file for metal, we eliminate the remainder of the blade from the handle, leaving only a few centimeters for the future opener. During this operation, you must work with gloves and glasses.

3 stage. The remaining blade segment is processed on emery. The cutting edge is dull and the edges are rounded.

4th stage. Using a marker, mark the future opener on the blade. It’s not a bad idea to take a factory or tried-and-tested opener, so that making a new one would not be in vain. A little trick: for the manufacture of a tongue that catches the cork, it is best to use the opposite part from the cutting side of the knife. There, the thickness of the metal is greater, and the tongue of the opener will turn out to be more durable.

5 stage. It is necessary to cut the future opener to size. For these purposes, a grinder is perfect. With it, you can saw off large pieces of metal, as well as carry out the initial rough cut for the tongue, which will catch the cork. Then, using emery and fine stone, the workpiece is cleaned.

6 stage. Almost finished product is processed with a drill with a polishing nozzle and an emery cloth. This will smooth the corners and give shine to the future opener. After this treatment, all the bumps and scratches will disappear from the product, and it will shimmer and shine, as if it were produced at the factory.

7th stage. Ready-made homemade opener can be decorated. This is justified in cases where you want the opener to be suspended on the wall. For these purposes, it is necessary to take thick paper and print the strip-substrate on the printer, on which the opener will be mounted. The text can serve as a humorous instruction for using the opener. Then, using a wooden lining, a tube and a hammer, 3 holes are punched. Through 2 of them (central), the opener itself is secured with a disposable plastic clamp. And the third will serve to hang the openers on the wall.

As a result, such a graceful, stylish and useful thing in the household turned out to be from recycled materials.

In addition to openers, you can try to make chisels, screwdrivers, awls, punch. If you make a cutout like an opener, but the other way, you get a knife for stripping. If there are 2 similar knives, then you can try to make scissors. The handle can be fixed (for example by welding) to the shock part and a hammer will be obtained. I have a hammer with a shortened handle that often helped me. Here is his photo.
