The simplest knife from an old spatula

The simplest knife from an old spatula

If you need knives for some simple household needs, knives that you don’t mind breaking or losing, this instruction is for you. Today we will look at how to make simple knives from old spatulas that you don’t know where to put, but it’s a pity to throw them away. The steel in them is not particularly strong for making a high-quality knife, but it copes with its tasks quite well. At least here in most cases there is already a handle that does not need to be modified.

Materials and tools for making knives:
- old spatula;
- ruler, felt-tip pen and other tools for applying the profile;
- grinder or dremel;
- preferably sharpened (you can do with a grinder);
- It would be nice to have a belt sander.

Observe safety precautions, use gloves, goggles and do not neglect clothing with long sleeves.

The process of making a knife:

Step one. Drawing a pattern
First of all, you will need to apply a knife profile to the spatula metal, which you subsequently cut. You can think of a profile as you like. You can draw it immediately by hand on metal, without transferring anything from a sheet of paper. Unless of course you decide to do them in bulk, you can make one template for yourself from cardboard.

The profile of the knife must be applied so that the future blade is located opposite the handle.

Step Two Cut the knife
Further, a Bulgarian comes to the rescue, it is more convenient to work, of course, as a dremel. Just cut out the rough shape of our profile. After that, the author proceeds to the next step - grinding.

Step Three Grind the workpiece
Such a procedure is most conveniently carried out on a belt sander. In an extreme case, all this can be done manually using sandpaper. Our task here is to clean the pen, as well as the metal from dirt, rust and other contaminants. Ideally, the handle should be made as smooth as possible, and the metal shiny.

Step Four Make bevels
Despite the fact that the spatula metal is rather thin, the author manages to make bevels on the knife. However, the metal in the old spatulas was probably much thicker than modern ones.
Work is carried out on a conventional grinder. The task here is at least to sharpen the knife.

Step FiveTesting a knife
Of course, the metal quality of such a knife leaves much to be desired. But, according to the author, it can be up to the state of the blade and he will cut the paper, though he will quickly blunt about solid objects. However, who prevents to grind it regularly?
