The deck chair was invented by civilization not only for use on the beaches. It will be a great addition to the terrace or patio of a country house. Most sun loungers have a simple design with an adjustable backrest. This allows you to make it from almost any material. Including natural wood or plywood - the most common and affordable materials for the home master of furniture.
Often, wooden sun loungers are complemented by fully removable textile pillows or mattresses. They can be purchased in the store, but it is better to do it yourself, based on your own needs, preferences for textiles and the intended sizes of a deck chair.
The chaise lounge from this master class decomposes into a working position with a light wave of a hand. It is still not too light, but the dimensions and weight make it possible to transport it in the folded state without special difficulties and store it in the utility room during seasonal cold weather.
Construction two identical wooden deckchairs cost their author $ 85. Probably, the purchase of something like this in the cabin would be delayed by an amount many times higher than indicated. And in our realities, the manufacture of a wooden deck chair do it yourself will cost quite a bit of blood. Let's see what is needed for this:
Materials:
- pine boards with a thickness of 25 - 30 mm for the manufacture of a supporting structure and bars with a cross section of 25 x 25 for the same purposes;
- pine boards for flooring under a mattress or pillows up to 20 mm thick;
- all kinds of rails to complement the design of the frame;
- one-piece long and ordinary hinges for folding device design;
- a primer-toner or protective decorative oil (you can use a regular stain based on alcohol);
- durable and waterproof varnish for external woodwork;
- glue for woodwork;
- wood screws and small nails;
- a finished mattress in size or fabric, foam rubber and durable thread for sewing it.
Instruments:
- miter saw or circular saw (jigsaw);
- grinder;
- electric drill;
- screwdriver;
- pneumatic nail gun or joiner's hammer;
- a sewing machine, if you plan to make a mattress yourself;
- soft fabric without lint and paint brushes;
- construction tape and square for marking;
- a pencil.
Step One: Matching Materials
The author used thick and wide boards from his workshop to make a deck chair. Of these, he received the rails, bars and smaller boards needed in the project. True, all this requires additional equipment.
If you do not have universal woodworking machines in this regard, all lumber can be purchased at the construction supermarket in the form and size you need. Be sure to evaluate the degree of wood drying, the quality of sawing and planing. Boards should have smooth edges if laid next to them and not create gaps. Their plane should be smooth, which saves you from additional grinding of the material.
Prepare lumber of suitable section, guided by recommendations and photos from this master class. You will need wide thicker boards for the construction of the main frame and slats and bars to complement it. In addition, narrower non-thick boards for the manufacture of flooring under the mattress will be required. Do not use thick boards in this area, otherwise the design will be unbearable. However, here you are free to replace the tree with any suitable lightweight material that your imagination will tell you.
Mark the parts according to the individual dimensions of the product. Start with the details of the frame, and mark out all the other elements after the assembly, to avoid confusion. Saw boards, bars and slats into pieces of the required length and proceed with the assembly of the deck chair.
Step two: assembling a wooden deck chair
Instead of making longitudinal elements of the frame - the most massive structural details - from a solid bar, the author resorted to a little trick. He glued several boards into a single array, thereby obtaining a wonderful and high-quality glued beam. Use proven adhesives from well-known manufacturers. Place the part in clamps and clamps during drying. Later, you can additionally fix it with self-tapping screws. Thus, prepare two longitudinal parts of the frame and fasten the bars on them as shown in the photo below.
Assemble also the U-shaped profile structure for the back wall of the back. The photo shows that she performs one of the key roles when unfolding a deck chair. In parallel, assemble on the glue and self-tapping screws a back consisting of two longitudinal and several transverse parts. In the center, along the back, fasten the U-shaped box.
Lay the base boards under the mattress using glue and small nails. To ensure that the gap between the strips is the same, use a rail across the width of the gap each time you fix the next bar. Try on the back. If there are enough slats, fasten the backrest to the long one-piece hinges.
Fabricate a support bar to secure the back. It consists of two parts glued together and additionally fixed with small studs. The long part of the support is sawed off at an angle, while the second - short - exactly. With this groove, the support is fixed in the U-shaped profile on the back of the back. The limiter for it is the stretch of prowess, securely fixed to the profile. Hang the support on the hinges using self-tapping screws, and test the design for the presence of curvature and degree of strength.
Step Three: Making Textiles
If you use a ready-made mattress, then the manufacture of a deck chair should begin with the purchase of the mattress itself. Then you can fit the dimensions of the wooden product under it. This is what the author of this master class did.
The mattress can be sewn by yourself. Even if you do not have experience in sewing and you do not know how to use a sewing machine, the work will not take you more than one day. All the nuances can be learned if desired.
You will need a suitable dense fabric, you can b / y, a cut of foam rubber according to the size of the mattress and thread to match the color for the sewing machine. Arm yourself with sharp cutting scissors that cut the fabric well.
Measure a piece of foam: its length, width and thickness. Thus, determine the size of the fabric that you will need for work: take into account the width and length of the foam rubber, add a couple of centimeters of the allowance for the seams and the allowance for the thickness of the mattress.Rest two identical sections of fabric and sew them on three sides: two longitudinal and one transverse. Stitch the corners of the cover so that it takes a three-dimensional shape under a thick layer of foam.
Turn the cover over your face. Place the foam inside and manually sew the cover on the fourth side.
Step Four: Wood Staining
It all depends on your preferences: whether you will use paint with a dense coating, toners or even transparent varnishes. The author picked up a primer-toner and moisture-resistant varnish for outdoor use.
This primer has an oily texture and is applied with a cloth in one or two layers. You can also use stain for alcohol and decorative oil. After toning, the deck chair should be varnished. Choose a resistant varnish for outdoor use. As a rule, this is a polyurethane varnish or nitro-varnish of varying degrees of dullness. Apply the varnish in two to three layers and give the coating enough time to harden. High-quality varnish should not be scratched with a fingernail.
Replace the deck chair and place a soft mattress on it.
