Save on matches

You will need a brass wire with a diameter of 3 mm, a piece of sheet brass or sheet metal and a flint for ignition (it can be replaced with a small piece of natural flint or an old emery wheel), a steel screw with a length of at least 50 mm, a diameter of 5-7 mm with fine thread and two nuts .
Using a file and a hacksaw for metal from the screw make the main part of the lighter. It is heated red-hot and quenched in cold water, then mounted in a brass cup with holes drilled on the sides, screwing nuts (the cup directs the sparks in the right direction). If you want to ignite the tow, they put it directly into the cup, into which some kerosene is poured.

The handle of the lighter resembles a pin, only for greater rigidity and convenience, loops are made on its beams. It is attached with a single beam to the screw with a nut, and at the end of the second beam a tube is made for fastening the flint. It is better to solder or rivet the tube so that it holds tightly.
When pressing the loose half of the handle, the flint inserted into the tube draws on the hardened screw: the more often the pressing, the more sparks appear when the flint is rubbed against the screw surface.

Such a lighter-flint was used at the beginning of the century, and only the production of matches drove it out of household goods.
