Solar Phone

For some reason, phone makers are still not releasing decent self-recharging gadgets. The picture above shows the Samsung E1107 phone, which, according to the manufacturer, is capable of fully recharging from the sun in 55 hours. But this is only possible under ideal conditions, and there are simply no such conditions in Moscow, where the author lives. Therefore, the author decided to create his model phone on a solar battery.

Materials required to create a solar phone:
1) solar panel
2) Alcatel ot-117 phone
3) Nokia cable with microusb connector
4) soldering iron

Take a closer look at the author’s idea and the stages of its implementation.

As a test sample, the author decided to choose an inexpensive phone with the lowest possible energy consumption. This phone was Alcatel ot-117 with a small black and white screen. The author plans to place the solar panel itself on the back cover of the phone.

Further, the author decided to look for a suitable solar panel at an affordable price, but in Moscow it was not easy to find such a thing. In addition, the author did not want to spend a lot of time searching or waiting for the delivery of the solar panel. Therefore, it was decided to buy Chinese-made solar charging. It was purchased based on the necessary characteristics: a full charge of a 500 mAh battery in 14-16 hours. It is of such power that the battery is installed in the Alcatel ot-117 phone, and 14-16 hours of sunny weather can be found in 4 days, since the phone is completely discharged during this time.

After the basic elements were purchased, the author began preparatory work.
The cable from Nokia with a microusb connector was cut:

Thus, on the one hand, a microusb connector turned out, and on the other 4 wires that can be connected to the solar panel:

This is exactly what the author started with the next step. To connect the wire to the contacts of the solar battery, the red wire from the cable was soldered with the red wire from the solar cell, that is, the plus is connected to the plus. To connect the minus and minus, the blue wire from the solar panel was soldered with the black wire from the cable. The white and green wires were also closed in order to charge.

Below is the entire wiring diagram:

As a result, we got such a sample for conducting experiments:

The experiment was carried out in an office with windows facing the east side. The author works from 8 am to 5 pm, respectively, at this time the phone was on the desktop. In the course of such an experiment, it turned out that to fully charge the battery, only two sunny days are enough, and on the cloud one day is needed.
Since the phone is capable of holding charging for up to 4 days, the author considered the experiment successful.
Further, the author plans to solder the entire system under the phone’s body directly to the microusb connector and place everything in the battery cover. This design does not require additions in the form of diodes or other circuits, since there is no discharge of the phone when connected to the microusb connector, and it is charged naturally by the manufacturer, only in this case the source is a solar battery. Moreover, the charging process itself is displayed on the screen of a mobile phone.

Here is the microusb connector and the wiring diagram for it:

And this photo of an already assembled solar-powered phone:

The author decided to fix the solar panel on a regular double-sided tape on the back of the phone:

In the future, the author plans to improve such a scheme with a more powerful solar panel ordered on eBay. The new panel will be twice as efficient as charging the phone.

Also, the author still plans to use the SS14 diode in the connection scheme, just so that a message about constant connection and disconnection of charging is not displayed.
