A simple way to transfer images from paper to various surfaces

Probably, each of us happened to meet a picture we liked so much that we wanted to “frame it” and regularly come over to admire it. Some pictures from the Internet or especially successful photographs are really worthy of being captured in the format of a real picture or transferred to a more durable medium than ordinary paper.

You can, of course, purchase thermal transfer paper for a laser printer and transfer your favorite image without any problems. However, such material is an expensive pleasure (from 220 rubles and more for 5 A4 sheets). And if the image size is non-standard? Or is it required to be transferred, for example, to a wall? In this case, thermal transfer paper will not work. In addition, it transfers the image in a “whole piece”, which makes it impossible to achieve the effect that it was painted with paints.

We offer a simple and affordable way to transfer the printed image to the canvas, as well as to wooden and many other surfaces.

To implement this procedure, we need:

• a picture printed on a laser printer, or a photograph (the ink of the inkjet printer will “float” during transfer, so you cannot use such drawings);
• canvas (or other surface) where you want to transfer the image;
• wide adhesive tape;
• spray gun;
• water;
• brush with a small pile;
• soil;
• acrylic paint.

Stage 1

First of all, it is necessary to prime the surface - in this case, it is a canvas - onto which the image from paper will be transferred. In the absence of a special primer, this can be done with the same acrylic paint (only diluted) that will be used in the future.

For example, the author of this transfer method uses green paint as a primer.

For best results, you can coat the canvas with diluted paint two to three times. We wait for complete drying and proceed to the second stage.

Stage 2

We take our image, place it on the working surface and completely glue the back side with adhesive tape. We apply it with overlapping stripes so that there are no gaps. Thanks to adhesive tape, the image will become more dense, and will not be warped during transfer.

After gluing our picture, turn it over and crop off the ends of the tape that extend beyond the sheet.

Stage 3

Now we need a primed canvas (either a wooden or chipboard surface), where we need to transfer the image. We apply a thin layer of acrylic paint on it and carefully distribute it over the entire surface.

As soon as the paint is applied, gently press the base to the image.

After this, wait until the paint has completely dried.

Stage 4

When the paint dries, you can begin to remove the layer of tape from the canvas. You just need to pull one of the corners of the image. We remove it carefully and leisurely, without applying much effort so as not to damage anything.

As a result, only a paper layer will remain on the canvas. It must be moistened with water from a spray bottle.

Stage 5

It remains to remove the soaked paper. This must be done very carefully so as not to damage the image. The author of the method removes an unnecessary layer with just a hand. It doesn’t work out too quickly, so with proper dexterity you can use, for example, a sponge - it will allow you to remove wet paper faster.

After removing the wet layer, you should also wait until the image dries.

That's all, the image transfer took place. Since only printed lines are transferred to the canvas, the main background is only partially covered by the picture, which makes it look like it is drawn.

Thanks to this simple and budget way, you can make a non-trivial gift to friends or relatives. In addition, it can be used for design purposes or to give uniqueness to any interior objects.
Thanks for attention!

A paw would still be on top, water-based, just in case from a spray bottle.
I met advice that paper should be washed off with acetone, and not with water. I have not tried it, I don’t know. Another Amer. The site met a special composition which you need to cover the surface. Need to try with PVA.
